Chapter 1
Oken of Tremblar
In a universe different from ours, so the legend tells, there exists an artifact so powerful, so sought after, and so strong that it can control the whole of the Galactic Universe.
The artifact is a book of power that no one or nothing can stand against. To posses it means ultimate power and to be a conqueror like no other in the know Galactic Universe.
Such is the power of this artifact, it is known as the book of power, many and everyone seek it, for with it they can rule the universe forever and obtain any desire known to mortal man.
Oken was bred and spawned by his father for one most important purpose, to find the ancient artifact. From birth Oken was provided and given the best anyone could obtain. As soon as he could grasp his training began in all manner of arms, ancient and new, taught all forms of strategies of war, single combat, combat of arms and against planets and elite forms of Galactic war and more important the way of the wizards and the supernatural arts.
The portal, a strange alien doorway, had given the unique planet Tremblar an edge and a reach that the other primitive planet possessed but did work as well Tremblar. Primitive itself Tremblar was somehow different from the other planets and its people traveled the known universe with little trouble and gaining more so the story tells. The portal of passage built ages ago by the long gone ancients gave everyone the right to travel and seek endeavors of their choice, some choices not so pleasant, but Tremblar had reached and grown further then all the galactic worlds and was thought of as the lead world of the universe.
No one understood how the portal of passage worked nor did anyone attempt to build one. And yet, the portal of passage served Tremblar well. But more than anything else the ancient legend talked about the book of power long ago lost since from the times of the ancients who had left their mark on the planet Tremblar with their incredible machines. What had happened to the ancients? No one knew, although many myths and legends spoke of the old ones and their incredible power and manipulation of the physical laws of the dark mysterious universe.
Oken was raised and taught by the wisest of men about the history, the legends, and theories, any and all knowledge to help serve him when he was sent to search and retrieve the book of power. And, he was taught in the arts of the mystics and the sorcery of the wisest until he mastered the skills of the supernatural and their manipulation and his powers in wizardry grew to be of the strongest.
His father, Luden, had fathered many children from the best women stock available. Women who possessed great physical skill and extra ordinary mental ability like no others. Of all the children Oken and two other boys had survived to young manhood. Most of the spawned children died of disease, injury in training or lacked the temperament of mind for the single minded purpose. His two half brothers were chosen to remain and rule under Luden and to co-rule when Luden departed from the realm of the living, a time too distant to think about.
And the women selected for breeding by Luden were women of their own minds. If they mated with Luden it was because it suited them and if they wanted any man they had him at their leisure. And it was for their own unique purpose of mind that they choose to link with Luden which gave them importance, social position, and high respectful standing in the realm know to the planet Tremblar. And so the pacts were forged and sealed and of all bred children Oken remained in honorable favor for the search to come as he waited to retrieve the lost artifact and return it to Luden, his father, on Tremblar for Oken was not only brave but loyal and he loved his father like any son would, some said like no other son.
His training had given him one sole purpose of body and mind, to search for the lost artifact at all cost and not return without it. For his search Oken had been give special warriors with skill in fighting and skills to command supernatural powers although none on the level of Oken.
What they must face no one could foretell or truly be prepared for and it was said that no one cold know the future tribulations to come in this search.
What fears and dangers they must come against and endure was a mystery each supernatural warrior was ready to stand up to knowing the worst in their minds, but with the inner strength to face it anywhere or anytime for such was their inner strength and for this reason each warrior was specially selected.
With enemies of greed and envy every watching, it had been decided for Oken and his supernatural warriors to depart Tremblar in the cloak of night. For those that watched wanted the book of power without risk, task, or danger, some felt they could steal it from Oken once found and others felt they could push ahead and beat Oken to the book, one with a black cover some said.
The task and search came with considerable effort for Oken for he faced the universe itself and ahead of him were the myths, legends, and oral tales to follow. Oken held the search close for he knew it could mean a life time of wondering, the planet riddled universe with blind dead ends for his efforts, but he was committed to the task, his father, and locating the book of power.
Reviewing the legends and myths, form ragged parchments and from the mouths of the wise and old, Oken decided, after talking with council, that he would head to a planet know to exist on the other side of the known universe. It was known that the book of power, if legend was to be believed, that the powerful book was held in a dark place, perhaps a cave deep in the ground, maybe in a fortress of stone and steel, maybe even at the bottom of the deepest ocean. That was for Oken to search and know, and that was the task that only a great leader, warrior wizard, and strong young man like Oken could fulfill.
The planet on the other side of the universe was called Lost Crimson because travel to it required getting to it indirectly. Move from one planet to another and if you were not careful it was easy to get lost or not even find Lost Crimson and end up on a different planet. As easy as it was to use the portal of passage, it was just as easy to get lost in the universe, one had to know the ways of the portal of passage, and its use or one could be lost traveling the universe forever and left forever wondering the universe through the portal of passage with no end.
It was said that no such book existed, that all was myth and legend and that the stories of the book of power were a reflection of man’s ego and vanity. Luden did not and had never believed that the stories reflected man’s inner self. How then could the machines and portal of passage exit, asked Luden, and how did the ancients gain such power if not from the book or did the ancients create the illusive book of power? Either way it was the source Luden wanted for the artifact was the source of fantastic power for the person that understood and possessed it.
Oken ponder these and other points and he felt proud to be the one chosen to seek and carry the book of power back to Tremblar his place of birth, his people, and most of all his father.
He had learned from the best and wisest wizards and his power had grown great as a young wizard. His ability to cast and use spells equaled the strongest wizards of Tremblar, but Tremblar was but one planet in an infinite and dangerous universe. And there were other perils for Oken to consider. The legends talked of beasts, of creatures, of supernatural powers only heard about and never seen by the living for the dead cannot recount battles or over powering events against them.
Working and practicing his supernatural skill Oken lifted heavy stones from a distance and floated them in the air then crushed them in smaller stones which he danced in a circle, the stones left in oval form and other shapes. He worked the same with water from the fountain nearby where athletic men washed sweat and dirt from their bodies but Oken always practiced alone or with a champion that guided and taught him the arts.
Would his wizard skills suffice, Oken wondered, to protect his men, and would he return alone or survive not at all? For a good wizard has power but so
