    Dearest Beloved,

    It is so strange to be writing to you like this. It is so strange not to see your face as your blue eyes flickered with emotions. The lines on your once-smooth face furrowing deeper and deeper into your skin, as time continued its journey imperceptibly, so that yesterday seemed the same as today and today was a replica of tomorrow.

    I remember the twinkle in your eyes, being the avid storyteller you always were, when you retold our stories with such passion on how we had to flee our home town and leave our families, as we were guilty of loving each other in a country where it was a criminal offence to have a relationship between a white man and an Indian woman. It was the early days when turmoil in the 1970s and ’80s was rife in South Africa, as the majority of the people, including the world at large, wanted change, but there were also many who feared change, holding on steadfastly. The apartheid system had ingrained a sense of separatism that made it taboo to cross the colour lines and enter into
