    Frank Conroy was born in 1936 in New York and grew up there with his mentally unstable father and an absent mother. At a young age, he dove into reading and developed a great passion for music, particularly jazz. He later became a distinguished pianist.

    He then taught in several American universities as well as leading the prestigious writers’ workshop. He became a celebrated writer when he published his autobiography Stop-Time in 1967. From then on, he wrote many novels as well as short stories and articles about music.

    He received numerous awards for his work, including the title of chevalier des arts et des lettres (‘knight of arts and letters’) by the French government.
