    Seed - Kelly Hudson

    Seed

    By

    Kelly M. Hudson

Lisa buried her head in her hands, thanking God she didn't have to fake the tears. Her husband Brad was dead, and although she should have been grieving, mostly what she felt was relief.

And then a funny thing happened. Dr. Morrow, the emergency room physician that had seen to Brad, was standing over her, having delivered the grim news just moments before, when a nurse ran up, grabbed him by the arm, and pulled him away. It was just frantic enough to snatch up her attention, to quell her tears for one bitter moment.

Lisa stood, her legs wobbling. She was drained from all the stress but now her body surged with fear. Had they found something out?

She crossed her arms over her chest and rubbed her elbows with her hands. This was probably nothing. It was another emergency, another person had come in, a car accident or a heart attack or God only knew what else. That's all it was. Dr. Morrow was needed somewhere else, onto something more pressing. Soon, a nurse would come and refer her to a grief counselor at the hospital and that would be the end of it all. He was dead and it was an accident and now she could start planning for the rest of her life.

Dr. Morrow returned seconds later with the most puzzled expression on his face. He stood before her, not saying a word, his mouth working open and shut, his lips pursing, creating a small bubble that popped only to be replaced by another.

    What is it? Lisa said.

It's just, I, well... Dr. Morrow stammered. I don't really know how to say this.

Oh, God, Lisa thought. Oh, no. Her heart sank. They knew. Somehow, they knew.

Your husband is alive, Mrs. Roberts, Dr. Morrow said. He's come back to life, or was never really dead in the first place. We're not sure.

These were not the words she was expecting.

What? she said. Numbness spread through her body like she’d been drugged.

It's a miracle, Mrs. Roberts, Dr. Morrow said. Your husband is alive.

This time, she cried for real.

They had no real explanation. When the ambulance had come, Dr. Morrow said, Brad had been barely alive. His pulse was as weak as could be and his breath so shallow you couldn't see his chest rise and fall. They tried putting him on machines that would work his
