    Chapter One: Introduction

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn was first published in 2012. It is a thriller novel. In a few days after its publication, the book became the Best Seller on the New York Times List.

Nick Dunne is the central character. The entire suspense of the novel comes from Nick and whether he has his hand in the disappearance of his wife.

Once, during an interview, the author revealed that she wanted to explore the psychology and dynamics of a long term relationship. She used to write for Entertainment Weekly, but she was unfortunately laid off. Her characters in the book are the writers who are out of work.

The book was highly positively received and most of the reviews were positive. The critics admired the book and the writer’s literary skills. The unreliable narration, suspense, and complex and twisting plot were admired by the reviewers.

The book was adapted into a move that was released on 3rd of October, 2014. It was a highly successful movie, both financially and critically, widely acclaimed and talked about.

During an interview, the author admitted that she had put some of herself in the character of Nick Dunne. She was also a popular culture writer like Dunne. She was also laid off like the central character. She had worked on the same job for several years.

People found it quite surprising that how a female writer could write so believably about a man’s inner life. On being asked about it, the author once said that she was kind of part guy herself.

Later on, in her autobiographical essay, I Was Not a Nice Little Girl, she invites her readers to believe that she had been inspired by her interior monologue.

The author admitted that she was greatly influenced by mystery writers such as Laura Lippman, Karin Slaughter, George Pelecanons, Demnis Lehane, and Harlan Coben.

    Chapter Two: Plot Overview

The novel opens on the morning of the wedding anniversary of Nick Dune. The same day, his wife, Amy Elliot Dunne suddenly disappears from their home in North Carthage, Missouri.

Nick and Amy had come to live in Missouri from New York a few years before. They were compelled to move because Nick’s mother Maureen found to be suffering from cancer.

Amy was from New York, she was obviously not very much excited about moving to New York. She did not like it because her husband had taken the decision of moving to New York without consulting her. They were already in trouble because both Amy and Nick had recently lost their jobs.

In New York, now, Nick works at a bar. He is the joint owner of that bar with his twin sister Margo. He is a part time teacher as well. He teaches at the local community college.

Amy has not found a job, and she does not feel friendly in their new community. She has not made any friends there. At the time of her disappearance, their marriage was in crisis.

That day, his neighbour phones Nick and informs him that he sees some suspicious signs at his house. Nick rushes to his home and finds that his wife has disappeared. He thinks that she has probably been abducted, so he quickly calls the police.

Several cops are there in his house that night. There are several news reporters too. Since Amy happens to be a famous character, having been made popular by her Amazing Amy
