Chapter 1
40th Avenue, Denver, Colorado
Inside the Lightshade Peoria, a high end marijuana dispensary, Eve stands in front of a glass counter reading everything on the subject of the various marijuana strains and blends offered.
- Let me see here, hmm... whether used for medical or recreational purposes, this Sativa provides effects ranging from a feeling of relaxation to complete euphoria and includes nausea suppression. It has the highest THC levels in lab tests.
Eve makes her choice.
- Alright, I’ll have a couple of ounces of this, please.
- Good choice, I can tell you’re a connoisseur, this is a real knock out; full of citrus aroma and a lemony pine flavour. You’ll enjoy it very much.
She pays the vendor and exits the dispensary contented with her purchase. She is going to share it with a few friends that she is meeting later on that day. This strain should provide pleasant effects for her friends that evening.
She then drove to her apartment to get ready for her guests who would be showing up in a few hours.
Eve Monaco was a typical young adult in her early twenties, a student who had just successfully completed her last year of studies as an intern at the University of Colorado Hospital and University of Medicine. Her medical training would soon result with a PhD degree in Osteopathic medicine.
This evening’s gathering of friends would probably be the last one of its kind since everyone would be dispersing to their home cities to carry on with their lives and work outside of Denver. Eve would however stay in the city as it was already arranged that she would take over the practice including all current patients of a retiring local physician.
Eve had originally met the physician when she came to her as a patient. She got to know the doctor who, when she was ready to retire, offered to sell Eve the practice. It was a very affluent business that she had built up over the last twenty years.
In order to finalize the purchase of the practice, Eve had to make a couple of major concessions; the major one being renouncing her eccentric appearance to which the doctor had clearly voiced her disapproval.
Eve was a petite woman, only five foot three, she however wore black lipstick, her black hair was always pulled up in several pony tails, and these were all dyed different colors of purple and pink. She usually wore high heeled low black leather boots, razor skirts and T-shirts.
She had also undergone several tattoo sessions to cover a few birthmarks on her back and upper arms. These were of mixed designs, exotic flowers and Japanese calligraphy.
Her look had raised more than a few eyebrows while she attended the university and during her internship. Despite most of her body being covered by a knee-length white lab coat, she couldn’t be ignored.
Her internship co-workers had become used to her look. They knew that at some point, she would, like many others before her, change her appearance in order to enter and succeed in the work force.
Everything to do with Eve’s future seemed to be going in the right direction. She was after all a brilliant woman with a good temperament and she had proved that she could thrive in any area on which she focused her attention.
Nobody could understand how she could be so talented and look so weird at the same time. She definitely surpassed all the other students, scoring big on her exams.
The week before, she had attended graduation and finally held in her hands the diploma she had coveted for several years. She finally had the reward for all her efforts.
The last order of business was to enjoy a very good party with her friends. They ordered fast food, consumed the totally of her earlier purchase along with a good quality of alcohol. Everybody enjoyed themselves in the company of their friends for the last time.
- Well, this is the end of our time together; I really enjoyed your company, said one of her co-students.
They had worked together a lot during her internship and while they had become fond of each other, they had no plans to extend their relationship after this point in time. They were going their separate ways the very next day.
While they were all having a good time at the party, one of her friends proposed doing something a bit different, something that might be interesting for all of them. She produced sample DNA kits for everyone and invited them all to perform a saliva swab test. She said that she would make sure that the results would be mailed to them within the next six to eight weeks.
She went on to say that this latest DNA kit would provide information that was more relevant and recent, targeting their family histories over a few hundred or even a thousand years. All they had to do was to use the saliva collection tube provided with
