The Lamp Base
Fundamental Lamp Groups
Basically there are but three major areas from which light may reach a room: the ceiling, the walls and from somewhere within the room itself by means of portables
. In all of these areas, lighting may be installed as recessed, flush, or extending fixtures. These lights fixture forms are determined by whether they intend to supply key or spot lighting. Then too, added factors are involved whether large areas are to be covered in one thrust of the beam and whether these beams are to be soft or hard light.
In the group called ceiling pieces, light may emanate from a ceiling fixture which casts its glow directly over the surrounding surfaces or from some nearby spot set to illuminate the ceiling. These are considered high level lights both in purpose and in plan.
Pendant pieces, like chandeliers, are used especially if the ceiling level is high. Light reflected from excessive distances loses much of its potential because the unused voids between soak up so much light to little or no purpose. These pendant fixtures make it possible to bring the source closer to the area of use with greatest of economy in output and efficiency. These lighting mechanisms should serve a decorative as well as a utilitarian purpose. Their shapes, materials and color must harmonize with the architecture and the interior decoration of the room.
Wall fixtures are devices which help bring illumination to the middle areas of the room. They serve as light balances and color controls in the decoration and are made in a variety of forms.
The most permanent of these are designed as part of the architectural scheme. These are disguised within the moldings and covered with baffles so that the light achieves a directional spill over predetermined areas of the room. Cove lights are one illustration of
