Garden lighting is every bit as important as the timber you use for your decking or the barbecue you choose for your entertaining area. It’s something that needs to be considered and planned from the outset and this includes what to light and how, as well as where the wiring will go and how many power sources will be needed.

Thinking about how you will light your garden during the design stage makes all the difference to how it will look — and feel — at night. By incorporating your lighting plan into your original garden design plan, you won’t just ensure that it has the right ambience, you will be guaranteeing it will function exactly how you need it to.

“Lighting is a major factor in any garden and is what brings it to life in the evening,” says Steve Warner, director of OUTHOUSE Design. “Lighting can change the mood and feeling of a space, it can highlight an artwork, increase a garden’s sense of intimacy or create the illusion of more space.
