    Vincent John Greeley, Vice President of Nationwide Bank and amateur taxidermist put down the phone and turned to his daughter who was pacing the living room floor.

    That was your mother.

    You didn’t tell her I was here?

    Of course I didn’t but she’s coming over anyway.

    No! She’ll call the police, you know she will. She hates me.

    Vincent refrained from trotting out the platitudes life had taught him were an appropriate response to such a statement. He knew Morgaine was not looking for reassurance she was simply stating a fact.

    After what you’ve done, I’m sure the police won’t be far behind, he said.

    You can’t let them have me!

    Calm down. I won’t let anybody hurt you.

    How will you stop them? She’ll tell them I’m here.

    Vincent dropped his hand to the head of the Westie sitting beside his chair. The feel of the soft fur under his hand was enough to wash away his tension. He’d always liked the idea of being a dog owner but the care and attention they required made the reality unattractive.

    This subject’s life had ended painlessly; not because Vincent cared about such things but because in his hobby as in all areas of his life he was meticulous. A painless end was a trouble free end. He could only hope for the same when his time came.
