    Chapter One: Introduction

From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E. L. Konigsburg was first published in 1967.

It is said that during the author’s lifetime she had been inspired by numerous sources. The author, E. L. Konigsburg, used to leave her children at the galleries of the Met while she would be taking a painting class in the museum during the 1960s.

She would meet her children after her class and then they would go around the museum together. Eventually, in 1965, the author became really interested in the Met.

The characters in the novel are inspired by the author’s own children. Once, during a trip to Yellowstone, her children bitterly complained to her. She told her children that if they ever thought of running away, it would have to be a better place, a luxurious place, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The novel was admired by most of the scholars and reviewers of the time and it stood out among books of its era in virtue of showing family discord and a complex female character, Claudia.

Most of the female characters during the 1960s used to be docile, but Claudia is quite relentless in her pursuit of perfection and difference.

The author is also said to have been inspired by several female students and her own personal experiences.

The book won several awards, including the Newbery Medal. The novel has also been chosen as one of the Second Library Journal One Hundred Books that Shaped the Century.

The book is now on the reading playlists of several schools and colleges. Having been inspired by the success of the book, the Met devoted an entire issue of their children’s magazine to The Mixed-Up... in the year 2001.

The book has been made into two movies and both of them were fairly successful.

    Chapter Two: Plot Overview

The book begins with the prologue that is in the form of a letter. The letter is written by Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler to her
