    Chapter 1

I heard them long before I was actually awake. In my dream, the screams were coming from a fuzzy, bobble-headed muppet that bore some resemblance to Oscar the Grouch. It ran back and forth, its mouth flapping open, gibberish dribbling out. When I finally woke up, stumbled to the door, and looked into the hall, I realized that the reality wasn’t too far off.

Jessica was stomping down the hall, her skinny jeans hugging the wings of her hip bones. She was barreling towards me, and though she was no Oscar the Grouch, the fire in her eyes was enough to make me jump back.

Out of my way, Michelle McCarthy! she squawked.

I thought that was a bit rude. I mean, I’m a fan of Ms. McCarthy’s films, but I was already out of the way…

Out of morbid curiosity, I followed Jessica down the hall, now and then looking over my shoulder for Darren, my roommate and the ostensible owner of the fearsome Jessicabeast.

In the kitchen, Jessica was pulling on her thin leather jacket. You tell that asshole he better apologize or this is the last time I’m coming over to this shitty apartment! She swept her long copper hair out of her eyes and tied it back in a ponytail.

Black mascara stained her freckled skin, and for a moment I thought the two of us might share a genuine, human moment. But he said he’d rather stay in and just hang out with his pudgy roommate.

I shrugged. Darren just took over for Bobbi at the gym. I’m sure he was just tired.

Well he should have told me that!

It was 7am and Jessica already had her lip gloss on. The girl was like a walking cutout from a Sears catalog. I sighed and fiddled with the hem of my nightshirt (oh God I was standing in front of this girl in my nightshirt and no makeup). Jess, I think he did tell you that, you just kind of…started the party a little early last night.

    What? she squeaked.

I rolled my eyes. "Well, I didn’t get here until late but I do remember you standing on our table and asking Darren why he never takes you anywhere. At least I think that’s what you were
