I stopped so suddenly that I skidded on the dry leaves, dropping to one knee and steadying myself with on hand on the tree beside me. Something just at the edge of my senses sang to me, demanding attention. I closed my eyes and took a long deep breath.

The scents of the forest crashed over me like a defensive tackle on a quarterback. Indescribable aromas assaulted and teased me. I couldn’t put name to them, but my brain sorted through them, searching for something specific and unique.

There it was! A musky scent that sent my heart racing earlier that I couldn’t possibly know, but I did. The man who had kissed me at the party was close by.

His words rushed back to me. Find him. Hunt. Hunt him.

I sprang up and ran to my right. He was somewhere ahead of me now. Close.

He dropped out of a tree as I ran under it, landing on top of me. His bare feet sent me flying into a bush that ripped the top of my dress almost completely off. He laughed as I struggled to pull free from the brambles.

“You’re going to have to do better than that if you expect to catch me.”

By the time I’d gotten free, covered in scratches and wearing only my underwear, he was gone. I heard him sprinting away, still laughing and taunting me. I snarled and took off after him.

I quickly caught sight of him, but couldn’t get any closer. As fast as I ran, he easily outpaced me. He darted past any obstruction like a gazelle, while the forest beat me like a redheaded stepchild.

He lagged back just a bit only to taunt me further. “Faster, beautiful. Faster!” He pulled ahead smoothly until I lost sight of him.

I ground my teeth and forced myself to go faster, willing my feet to fly. I wouldn’t let my prey escape me.

You want me to do what? I stared at the liquor flask Mandy held out to me, but I made no move to take it.

A look of fierce irritation crossed my roommate’s face. She stepped in front of me, blocking my view of the frat house mixer, and making me retreat until my back pressed against the wall.
