    Introduction

There is an ebb and flow to life that, while ever changing, is also everlasting. I have always felt more connected to this flow than to human affairs. Even as a very small child, the natural world made much more sense to me than the human one, and does to this day.

Both science and magic explore the natural world, so it was no surprise when I found them mutually fascinating. Throughout my college years, I immersed myself in the study of the sciences and the esoteric. It soon became apparent that, while the practitioners of each form seemed diametrically opposed, the practices themselves were really one and the same – simply positioned differently along a frequency continuum.

Scientists like to find absolute truth, prove it and hang their hats on it. Mystics insist upon fluidity and mastery over the elements. The two practices only differ in what frequency they are studying. The hard sciences study matter in its denser form, while mystics work at the more fluid quantum level.

It wasn’t until quantum mechanics and string theory were introduced that science merged with the esoteric. Yet to this day, science and magic are seen as mutually exclusive. The disagreement is not in the way life works, but in the way we view it. We are shortsighted and polarized in both practices.

Magic has been reduced to dogmatic adherence to ritual with little or no understanding of the underlying physics. Science is limited by measurement and observation from crude instrumentation. The scientific method also fails to take into account the effect the observer has on the quantum level, and therefore on outcome. In short, both are flying blind.

I am the founder and director of a Colorado state certified occupational school. That sounds pretty scientific, until I add the fact that the school is of the shamanic arts. I am also a preceptor for the University of Colorado School of Medicine. At first blush, this looks scientific, until we add that I teach doctors the interface between allopathic medicine and shamanism.

Unless we merge science and magic, both will be limited and hold only partial truth. As long as scientists and mystics remain polarized in disagreement and invalidation, we have no hope of truly understanding the entirety of our world.

As fate would have it, I now find myself the host of a radio talk show, The Science of Magic, where I have the privilege of interviewing experts in both science and magic. Unencumbered by any prior knowledge of broadcasting, I simply use shamanic skills to bridge science, magic and my guest’s topic by offering a short teaching in the first segment of each episode.

Each teaching is the result of journeying or dreaming to find the place of agreement between the science and magic surrounding my guest’s subject matter. The results have been surprising, to say the least.

Increasingly, guests and listeners began asking for transcripts of the teachings. I find it a little embarrassing as, although the teachings pull on my personal life experiences, I don’t see them so much as mine. Rather, they are a co-creation between my shamanic connection to source, our amazing guests and their leading edge material, our listeners who draw forth the script and our producer, Rob McConnell, a master of his craft, possessing an uncanny esoteric connection with the listeners, current events, and life itself.

This formula has created a program comprised of episodes which continue to evolve, leading us all on a path to personal empowerment and spiritual enlightenment. I am simply the clear channel through which the information comes.

As a result of continued requests, The Science of Magic Book of Mysteries series was born.

It is my sincere hope that these books help bring agreement, alignment and understanding to both fields. It is in agreement and unity that higher truth can be found. Only through embracing higher truth can we evolve as individuals, and as a world, to the betterment of all.

    Chapter 1:

    The Science of Magic

    Science vs. Magic

There’s an age old, enthusiastic battle between scientists, philosophers, mystics, magical practitioners, and shaman. Many believe only one can be correct, and much effort is exerted to invalidate others’ viewpoints and methodology – to the detriment of all.

The scientific method is designed to produce explanations and predictions about the universe. A scientist engages in a systematic activity to acquire knowledge by performing research toward a more comprehensive understanding of nature, including physical, mathematical and social realms.

Philosophers aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of intangible aspects of reality and experience that cannot be physically measured.

Mysticism puts forward the belief that direct knowledge of God/Goddess, spiritual truth, or ultimate reality, can be attained through subjective experience, such as intuition or insight.

Magic is considered to be the use of mystical methods to manipulate natural forces.

Finally, shamanism is often defined as a practice that involves a practitioner reaching altered states of consciousness in order to perceive and interact with the spirit world, and channel these mystical energies into this world. Shaman are also considered intermediaries or messengers between the human world and spirit worlds, who treat ailments/illness by mending the soul.

Historically, during what I refer to as the long dark or lower frequency times, these practices have been at odds with each other. We have been moving through a portion of our galaxy that, by its very nature, offers a polarized, narrow bandwidth of frequency or reality. Now, as we enter a higher frequency portion of our galaxy, we are being bathed in a more unified, expansive experience. This is a time of unification.

These galactic influences are very accurately charted by the Mayan Calendar, but we’ll reserve that discussion for another time.

During lower frequency times, science, philosophy, mysticism, magic and shamanism seemed to be conflicting belief systems. At higher frequencies, they are increasingly becoming viable roads to the same goal – understanding and interfacing with the natural world in all of its forms – the relentless search for truth.

As science becomes increasingly refined, it is able to measure the heretofore unmeasurable.

Because of this, the times are indeed changing.

There is one major obstacle standing between the unification of all of these practices. They all suffer from a certain amount of dogma, a natural result of the narrow view of life from times past. As well, each has suffered major indoctrination into dubious archaic practices, and been subjected to halfcocked, self-proclaimed experts in their field, spouting half-truths or total falsehoods.

In one extreme, the practices are strangled by regulation, and in the other, polluted by the lack thereof.

We live in unprecedented times wherein we have the opportunity to bring these practices out of the age of dogma, and wield them once again as living, evolving, mutually supportive sciences.

Thanks for joining me on this magical journey into enlightenment where we
