Fat and Sassy – First two chapters

    Introduction

After Grandma Jones (Vernon Beatrice Goss Jones) passed away in 2003, her children and many of the grandchildren got together to share recipes and memories of her life. They were gathered in a small cookbooklet, Grandma Jones’ Kitchen.

Keeping her memories alive, the family still shares stories about her and still make many of the dishes that they recall from the past. In the spirit of sharing her life, here is an updated version of the previous printed volume.

A new book is out, Fat and Sassy, telling stories of Bea’s life in a fictional tale. Included at the end, are the first two chapters to share the flavor of Fat and Sassy with you.

We hope you enjoy some of the recipes and tales told here.

    Recipes

    Drinks

    Punch from Gabriel

This recipe was handwritten in Grandma Jones’ cookbook. It’s been around for a long time. It was probably served at many a potluck at the stone church in Glendora. And most likely at many wedding and baby showers.

    Juice of three lemons

Two packages strawberry Jell-O, diluted as usual

    One quart orange juice

    Five bananas (blended)

    One can pineapple juice

One quart lime soda or ginger ale

    One quart water

    Ice cubes

    Directions:

    Mix all together and stir.

Add soda and ice cubes right before serving.

    Breads

    Plain Yeast Rolls

Willadean Jones, Grandma Jones’ sister in law, sent this recipe for the Family Secrets Cookbook.

    1 cup milk

    2 TB shortening

    2 TB sugar

    2 tsp. salt

    1 cake yeast

    ½ cup lukewarm water

    3 ½ cups flour

    1 egg, beaten

    Scald milk.

    Add shortening, sugar and salt.

    Dissolve yeast in warm water.

    Cool milk mixture to lukewarm.

Add yeast, beaten egg, and flour to make a soft dough.

    Knead until smooth.

Let rise until double in size.

Punch down and form into rolls.

Let rise until double in size.

Bake in 400 degree oven for about 20 minutes.

    Yield: 20 rolls

    Grandma Jones’ Fried Potatoes

Evan J. Jones, Alvin’s son, submitted this recipe for a prior cookbook, Grandma Jones’ Kitchen.

He wrote: Those of you that knew Grandma Jones have probably heard this story. I can remember it like it was yesterday. As a kid, between the ages of four to six
