Dance of the Wind - Marin Vayu
Dance of the Wind
On a spring day, a strong gust of wind took a little town on the west coast of Istria by surprise. Dark clouds covered the sky and flooded the streets with rich rain in a few moments. Nobody had expected a storm that day. It came out of the blue. Chairs and parasols were carried across restaurant terraces. People were running for cover, and all the shopkeepers quickly closed their stands. In the mayhem, only one stranger remained calm as if nothing was happening. He even seemed happy. He pulled on his gray raincoat and kept walking down the now deserted street. He was obviously not surprised by the storm, and he wasn’t at all concerned about taking shelter. He enjoyed this rarely seen display of bad weather. He passed through a few streets and reached the sea. For a while he looked at the waves crashing against the shore, and then he noticed something strange. There was a jewelry stand which was still open. He came closer; interested to see the saleswoman who thought she would actually make some money in this storm. It was a young girl who reclined calmly in her chair. She didn't seem to be waiting for customers. Her eyes were gazing gently at the storm. She, too, appeared to be happy. He smiled. Did he find somebody else who enjoyed this heavenly show as much as he did? He stopped a few paces away from the girl, and it was then that she noticed him. For a moment they looked at each other as if they were the only people in this world.
Then the stranger approached the girl, remembering that he had a necklace that needed its clasp replaced, since it had been falling off. Carefully, he took it off and asked the girl if she could fix it.
Of course
replied the girl, wearing a smile on her face, I'll take care of it right away.
When she took the unusual necklace in her hand, shivers went down her spine. She had always had a strong connection to objects; she was able to sense their energy. But this time it was much more intense than ever before. The girl stood for a moment and asked the man warily
Where did you get this necklace?
I got it from a friend.
She looked at him more closely. She couldn’t estimate how much the stranger actually knew about the necklace, so she remarked cunningly,
This is a very special necklace, and I am sure that it has a story to tell,
she said in an attempt to find out more.
Your intuition is probably very strong if it allowed you to sense this, because this necklace does indeed have a story of its own,
replied the stranger, surprised by her observation.
What is your name?
he asked.
Akasha,
replied the girl, puzzled by the stranger’s reference to intuition.
Akasha,
he repeated as if he didn’t hear well, and his eyes opened wide. In fact, he was so surprised that for a moment he was at a loss for words, but then he said,
"Did you know that according to the Vedas¹, Akasha is the Fifth Element?"²
Of course I knew that,
laughed Akasha, amazed by this stranger who was even familiar with Hindu mythology.
Wait, let me get you something!
said the stranger, hurrying off.
The wind was getting increasingly stronger and it forced the rain to fall almost horizontally. Fortunately, Akasha’s stand was well protected, and while she was fumbling with the necklace, the stranger came back with a book in his hand.
Here, this is a present for you,
he smiled warmly and handed her the book.
A book – for me!
the girl exclaimed. She had to raise her voice because of the deafening noise made by the wind and the rain. It seemed as though the rain wanted to listen in on their conversation.
Well, really, thank you very much, I love books,
shouted Akasha in excitement and handed the necklace back to the stranger.
Of course, she was so happy and grateful that she refused to charge for the repair. It was the least she could do. The weather would not allow them to get properly acquainted, so the stranger left, saying he would come back some other time.
Akasha opened the book at the first page and started reading. It saidThe Stormhunters.
The Adriatic Sea - West Coast of Istria
The southern wind usually brings dark clouds and epic waves to the Adriatic coast of the Mediterranean. Ivan helplessly watched the storm which had been raging for days. He was sitting on a small dock looking at the waves, waiting for the storm to pass. He was a fisherman and fishing was his sole livelihood. But not going fishing was much more serious to him than just not earning money.
Fishing was a way of life for Ivan, and the sea was his love and his dream. Out at sea, he felt serene while floating on the waves by day and gazing at the stars at night, trying to figure out his way back to shore.
He loved dawn the most. He would go fishing while his entire little town would still be asleep. Out in the open sea, he would throw his net into the water and wait for the sunrise. The moment when he would start his little boat’s engine at dawn and untie the rope that held it firmly to the dock, was the moment at which he left reality and entered imagination. At that point, he would leave all his problems on land.
But a fisherman’s life was as filled with problems as was anybody else’s. There was one particular problem that had been troubling him deeply for a while now. Some sort of an emotional cyclone was churning inside of him.
It was his ex-girlfriend.
As he looked at the storm, which showed no sign of abating, he began wondering whether the sea was trying to tell him something. He knew he was becoming more and more depressed as time went by. Lately, not even the sea was able to help him. Going fishing only helped repress his sorrow, which took up its abode in his heart ever since Tara had left him.
Why is this storm taking so long?
Ivan wondered on that day. Why is it so black and ugly; why doesn’t it just leave me alone, so I can go out to sea to new adventures?
he said, upset by the storm. He wasn’t sure, however, which storm was it that he was maddest at; the one at the sea, or his own emotional storm. The thought that sea storms were very similar to life’s problems flashed through his head. But it’s easy to deal with the cyclones on the sea,
he thought.
To wait… all you need is patience. After the storm comes the sun. But it is not always so with the storms of life,
Ivan concluded. Sometimes it seems that these storms have no intention of ebbing away on their own. That is how it seemed now, too. His cruel sorrow was here far too long and was not showing any signs of going away. Instead, it was turning into depression.
As he thought about those things sitting on the wet dock, hit by oncoming waves, he sank down into his emotions. He was looking for some sort of solution for his crisis.
Perhaps Tara’s departure was not the only cause of his sorrow. Maybe the source of his sufferings went deeper than he thought? Realizing that, he became worried.
And if it turns out I need professional help?
he wondered. He didn’t like the idea. As a fisherman, he never imagined that he would ever need counseling because the sea was just too simple. It would always bring healing into situations like this. Besides, he was one of those fishermen who never complained, no matter what the circumstances. Other fishermen would often talk about the lack of fish or sudden climate changes, which were bringing more and more storms into their sea lately. Of course, he also didn’t like storms, but he accepted them as a normal part of the weather. So why was it that he was having trouble accepting this worldly storm which he was experiencing right now, a storm that reached beyond fishing and beyond sea? The young fisherman was wrapped in thought while all of a sudden he felt as if the door of his consciousness was beginning to open, Waiting is definitely not the answer. I need to do something about this,
he concluded. At that moment he heard somebody’s footsteps behind him.
As the stranger drew closer, Ivan saw it was an old fisherman, defying the great waves and the storm in his little boat. He recognized the fisherman and admired his courage, as did most of the other fishermen, even though they thought he was crazy for going out on the sea when the waves were this high. Until then, Ivan had thought that it was because the man had no family or friends, so he had nothing to lose. But now, when Ivan found himself in a similar situation, abandoned and all alone, he still didn’t have the courage of the old man. He was still afraid of dying.
As he realized that, he became even more dissatisfied with
