    Darkness Eternal - Lorraine Kennedy

    Chapter One

    Kathrina

WITH EACH STEP I TOOK, it was harder to breathe. It was almost as if some invisible force was sucking the oxygen from my lungs.

I could sense them. They were all around me - hiding in the shadows. They were the lost souls of the undead and they existed for the sole purpose of reaching out to suck the life from those who still lived in the light.

Torches illuminated the passage, but the flickering light left too many dark spots and that’s where they hid. They hid in the shadows, always ready to snuff the life from the unsuspecting victim.

I knew he was close. The connection between us was so strong that I could hear his silent calls from the darkness.

Stopping, I glanced down at the ivory satin of my dress. It was spoiled by streaks of grimy muck.

Why was I wearing my wedding gown?

Why was I wandering the passages of Castle Argyle?

The chill of his hands on my arm sent my heart into orbit. My screams echoed through the passage, fading once I realized it was Luciano who’d touched me.

The hunger I saw in his eyes set fire to my blood. His beautiful - enchanting vampire eyes pulled at my soul.

One instant, I was staring into his eyes and the next I was cradled in his arms.

Luciano carried me through the passages, taking me deep into the bowels of his castle. The shadows no longer bothered me, not while my Prince of Darkness held me close to his heart. As long as I was with my love, I would always be safe.

Closing my eyes, I let my thoughts drift to that moment he’d taken my innocence.

It was the night that he saved me from another vampire. He’d been so angry, but what a night it turned out to be. The scene replayed in my mind as if it were happening all over again.

Transported back in time, I relived it with every sensation and every emotion.

Luciano was glaring at me, livid that I had nearly gone to the bed of another vampire.

I wasn’t intimidated by his anger. Instead, I stood my ground and glowered back at him.

Luciano’s sharp eyes were cutting right through me. You were acting irresponsible and ready to brazenly walk right into his trap.

I knew what I was doing, I retorted.

But that wasn’t completely true. The fact was that I’d let myself be hypnotized by the vampire. The thoughts that had been going through my head were not like me at all. Part of why the vampire’s spell was so powerful was that they could sense your wickedest desires and they used those desires against you.

"Sure you did,’ he said, grabbing my arm and pulling me toward the door.

Well ... you said that you didn’t mind if I experimented with someone else, I reminded him.

I didn’t mean a vampire that was planning to feed on you.

Well, he’d have gotten a big surprise when he did? I told him before adding, I did ask you to do this for me, and you won’t. I tried to yank my arm from his grasp, but he was too strong.

Stopping in mid-stride, he stared down at me. Is that what you want? Do you want me to take you to my bed and then feed on you?

Maybe the first part anyway. I gave him a sly smile.

He rolled his eyes and again started pulling me toward the door. A moment later, we were outside. Taking my hand in his, he led me to the side of the building where he proceeded to pin me against the brick wall.

His nearness brought on the trembling and a wild thumping in my chest.

His kisses trailed from my neck to my ear. What do you want? he whispered.

    You, I gasped.

I heard him chuckle and then felt fangs scrape against my neck.

If I do this for you ... then what? he asked, his voice low and trembling with his own pent up desire.

    I don’t know ... and I don’t care.

It was true. In that instant, I really didn’t care about anything but being in his arms. The other vampire had only managed to weave a spell over me because of my longing for Luciano, but I hadn’t lost sight of the one that I really wanted.

His lips moved to my mouth. I responded to his kiss with an unabashed display of passion as my tongue darted in and out of his mouth. I proceeded to caress his lips with my tongue, teasing him into wanting to taste more.

Luciano threw his head back and growled. You are driving me insane.

    Good, I whispered.

He wrapped his arms around me and drew me tight against him. Like a feather floating on air, we rose into the night sky.

Where are we going, I asked, though I really didn’t care where we went, as long as I was with him.

Someplace where I can give you what you crave, he said in a low voice before claiming my lips again.

A scorching heat spread from the core of my being to consume my entire body. I was sure that I would burn up right then and there. Closing my eyes, I let myself indulge in the sheer eroticism of the moment.

When we came down, we were near the guesthouse at the back of my father’s home. What are we doing here?

This is where I’ve been staying.

I was stunned. All that time that I’d been searching for him, he had literally been in my own backyard.

Your father is aware that I’m here.

Really? Why would he let you stay here? I wasn’t so sure that I believed him.

We both have the same goal ... to keep you safe.

I don’t know if he would agree that you were keeping me safe. He might find us here. Now I was having second thoughts, but only
