Sarah Smith

Making a career goal come true, Sarah has completed her first children's book. The book started out as a short story requirement in an assignment while completing a course at the Institute of Children's Literature. After completing the course, I concentrated on my career in the corporate world. Not feeling fully satisfied with the corporate world and needing the funds to survive, I continued in the corporate world until my retirement in 2012. Always knowing that I wanted to complete my book, I started down the road to accomplish the goal. The dream has finally surfaced again and I'm on my way. Thanks to the help of Smashwords, I have found a way to publish my book on the internet which I've always believe was the best way to get your book to as many readers as possible.

    Chapter One

Anna became the Duchess of Lincoln on the fifteenth of June, eighteen hundred and five. Anna's maiden name was van Leiden. Born in Veenendaal, Netherlands, she'd met Henry, Duke of Lincoln, when her parents sent her to stay with her rich aunt in London. One windy day in October she went with Aunt Emily to an exhibition of British paintings. The Duke spotted her walking arm in arm with her aunt and wasn't able to take his eyes off her. When she'd noticed how he was looking at her, she'd blushed and put her fan in front of her face.

''Congratulations, my Lord, she is a most beautiful bride,'' James Arbuthnot said as he stood next to the Duke at the wedding reception.

The Duke looked across the lawn at his bride and nodded in agreement. ''Yes she is very beautiful indeed.''

''She is remarkably tall for a lady.''

''That's how I first noticed her. The Dutch are tall, and as you say, she is no exception.''

Burton Hall was the largest house in the county of Lincolnshire. It had been given to one of the Duke's ancestors by King Richard as a reward for helping him on the crusades. The house stood in three hundred acres of the finest parkland in the country. The gardens around the house were magnificent. Tended by four full-time gardeners, they consisted of perfectly manicured lawns, highly colorful borders and beautiful statues. The house itself contained twenty bedrooms for family and guests, and enough rooms for thirty-five servants. It was built of sandstone with leaded light windows. The front door was raised on a terrace and accessible via a flight of stone steps. The Duke had recently commissioned a sculptor to add the family coat of arms above the door. Like most English stately homes, the roof was adorned with turrets and gargoyles and two giant chimney stacks. The main garden was at the rear of the house and the location of the wedding reception.

It was a beautiful day. The guests stood on the lawn and drank champagne which was handed to them by servants dressed in wigs, and blue, gold embossed coats.

''At last Henry. At last.'' John Wellington said
