The flight from San Diego was nothing compared to others Daniel Sully Sullivan had taken. The first time he travelled from the States to Iraq via Germany was a living nightmare. Not a man or woman on board expected to ever see home again. This flight was unpleasant for different reasons.

Something to drink? the perky flight attendant asked. He was in his civvies, but she knew he was military. Being recognized for his service was something he could do without: too much loss weighed on him.

No thank you, ma’am. He tried to drop the sir and ma’am, but it was a part of him now, one of many parts of the military that he would carry around with him for the rest of his life.

Sully was twenty-eight, and he had finished his final tour in Afghanistan as a Navy SEAL. His military career was considered successful because he came home alive with all his limbs and no visible scars. Considering he lost his older brother and buddy, it was far from successful. He had met his buddy Michael Lojo Lojacano in basic training and later watched as he’d died in his arms. Sully was on his way to Boston to check on Lojo’s wife Tess. Sully closed his eyes until he heard the pilot’s announcement. The fasten seat belt sign… Sully blocked out the rest of the announcement.

Sully looked at one of the photos he had of Tess. Although he had never met her in person, he felt as if he knew her. She was a mousy blonde with a medium build. Nothing to write home
