    A Tough Start

Grant Borgman was a freighter pilot, transporting goods between the four worlds which encircled a large blue white sun in the Regar system. To be a bit more exact, he only traveled between three of these worlds, as the fourth most outer one was rarely mentioned – even among his fellow pilots, and he sometimes wondered why.

His aging parents lived in a little bubble of their own, both of which spent most of their time compiling a history of the different races which inhabited their planetary system, and oblivious to most other thing – including himself. On the rare occasions when he had visited them, he sensed they were not really interested in him, or what he did – they were just polite, and served him a meal at the usual times, often not bothering to eat themselves.

Small wonder he felt a bit of a loner, as he had had to fend for himself for most of his life – at least since leaving school. To say he was a bit hard nosed, and a little uncaring for his fellow men would be putting it politely.

Grant had worked hard to get where he now was – a long apprenticeship in engineering gave him a good grounding in things mechanical, and then he took himself off to Flight Academy – as being a freighter pilot offered good money, and an interesting life among the other worlds.

Graduating took a little longer than he would have liked – but he made it, and was now a fully qualified freighter pilot – without a freighter. He could have just hired himself out to whoever needed his skills, but the real money lay in owning his own freighter, and then charging for the loads freighted – but that needed a lot of cash, much more than he had saved, so…..

Many years ago his parents had inherited a large estate, complete with several farms which they rented out, and this financed their lifestyle. On the pretext of leasing out one of the farms to a friend of his, he got them
