A Force Released
Zuki’s parents welcomed him with open arms, but were slightly hesitant about Kono, having heard rumours of his affliction.
‘Sorry I couldn’t get here sooner,’ Zuki said, ‘but things got into a bit of a rush, but we now have two days before we have to go off again; Brond said he had let you know I was well.’
‘Yes he did, but it’s not the same as seeing you,’ his mother said, ‘anyway I don’t always believe some of the officials we’ve met – they’re a funny lot. So, what can you tell us of your adventures?’
‘Not much really,’ replied Zuki, ‘we still have the same problem, but we think we’ve found a way to handle it – with Kono’s help.’
His parent’s eyes turned towards Kono, who smiled back in return, not sure what to say.
‘I suppose this means you will be going away again for an undisclosed period of time, as before,’ said his father, ‘not that we can do anything about it.’ He added, sadly.
‘Yes, we both will – we work together,’ Zuki replied, ‘what we have discovered is mind blowing, literally,’ he grinned, realising how near the truth he was, ‘but we can’t tell you anything until we have solved the problem we have.’
The two days leave went all too quickly for all of them, and Zuki and Kono returned to the underground complex to meet up with Brond.
‘Sorry we couldn’t give you more leave, but the Council is on our backs, and then some,’ Brond said cheerfully, ‘and they want to know what we are going to do about the alien threat. We have been asked to meet up with them, and give them our proposals.’
The following day all three entered the Council Chambers, looked around at the glum faces, and reluctantly sat down at the long table. One of the military men stood up,
‘I understand your experiment went very well, but we now have a huge conglomeration of aliens on the outskirts of our system, and I don’t see how one man can handle that lot.’
‘I got what you said,’ Zuki replied, ‘but let’s get some exact information – how many alien ships are there, and exactly where are they positioned?’
‘At the last count, there were about eighteen of them, in two groups,’ the military man said, ‘one lot of six is only just within long range detection, and the others are positioned in a tight group just a short distance from the mining planet, but neither group has moved for the last few days. I think our only chance is to go out there in force, and blast ’em. We may have some casualties, but I don’t see what else we can do.’ He sat down, his face grimly set.
‘I think I may have a better way of handling them,’ Zuki said, thinking on his feet, ‘what I propose is that we send out one of our ships, but somewhat modified. It will be under remote control, and at the right moment, will disgorge about four decoys which will spread out to surround the main ship, we need them to think they outnumber us and so will be more inclined to attack. The decoys will be, in effect, reflective balloons, such that they will appear to be part of a fleet. Each balloon will have a small amount of gas to be released when they are in position, inflating them to full size. To the aliens it will appear as though they have just materialised out of thin air, or should I say, space.’
Before he could continue, the military man jumped to his feet,
‘I really don’t see how a bunch of balloons will be of any help.’ he said derisively.
‘I hadn’t finished,’ Zuki retorted hotly, ‘the balloons will appear as an attacking fleet, and draw the aliens to engage. If we position ourselves carefully, shielded by the mining planet, we can pick them off, one by one as they pass.’
‘It will only take a flick from a laser or a missile to deflate the balloons,’ the military man almost shouted, ‘and then what do we do?’
‘If you would be kind enough to let me finish,’ Zuki said patiently, ‘the balloons will be
