Synopsis

In a faraway Galaxy, a solar system of some four planets came under threat from an alien force. On one of the planets, a civilisation had developed, split in two, and gone their separate ways. The alien threat had been handled for the time being, and a powerful fleet of defending space ships constructed using some of the alien technology. The means by which the aliens had been defeated was unusual, and the ‘powers that be’ wanted to know how it was done. The secret of the crystals was now known to a few, and they wanted them – at any price. Zuki was the first to have accidentally come across a crystal, and his abilities had been enhanced to a considerable degree. Kono was the second to be affected by a crystal, and the two had teamed up to help overcome the alien threat which had now been annulled, but how they had done this caused a lot of questions to be asked in high palaces …………

The Expedition

With Zuki and Kono, Brond called a meeting comprising three top officials of the Counsel, who had been allocated to the job of sanctioning a mission out to the Outlands.

‘Gentlemen,’ he began, ‘I seek your agreement to run an operation in secret to the Outlands. Something has been discovered that I think might be of great benefit to our society, but I can’t release details of it yet.

It is known that a certain section of the Council has an operations unit devoted to picking up anything unusual – I must insist that they do not probe into our operation – if they do, I’ll close it down, and destroy any data we may have gained. That is how important this operation is – do I have your total agreement.’

The three Council members muttered among themselves for a moment.

‘We do not think you have the authority to demand such conditions, and we don’t think they are necessary in the first place. What say you?’

‘My authority to run this operation comes straight from the Chief Councillor,’ Brond said in a very steady voice, ‘with all due respects, I don’t think you have the faintest idea what this mission is all about, and I am not authorised to tell you in any detail. Quite frankly, I don’t even know why you have been chosen to be in this meeting – especially as you obviously haven’t been briefed on the situation. I must have your complete co-operation on this matter – or you can take it up with the Chief Councillor.’
