    The Meanings of Productivity

    Productivity can be defined as the art of being able to create, generate or enhance goods and services. In simple economic terms, it is an average measure of the efficiency of production. It is expressed as a ratio of the inputs used in production to their output. Total productivity can, therefore, be achieved by considering all inputs and outputs when calculating the productivity measure. When you subtract the total inputs from the total output of a production process, you get the total income generated in the production process. The production performance of a firm largely depends on productivity and so does the production performance of a nation. This in turn translates to increased profitability which in most cases is the ultimate objective of any firm.

    National productivity

    Productivity is not everything, but it is almost everything. For any country to significantly improve the standards of living of its people, it must be able to increase the overall output per worker. That is productivity. The productivity of a nation can be measured using the same parameters used to measure the productivity of a company, only this time it should be done on a much wider scale.

    The importance of productivity among nations cannot be overemphasized. It is a crucial ingredient if not the only factor when considering the competitiveness of a country in a community of nations. There are different ways in which the productivity of a country can be measured. The choice of
