    They crawled underneath his skin. Their miniature legs felt to him like the sharp points of syringe needles, only they were on the wrong side of the epidermal layer, inside trying to get out instead of the other way around. At times they tickled, but most of the time they hurt so bad they made him want to scream.

    He was infected. He was pretty sure he’d caught it — whatever the hell it was — from Tegan. He never should have fucked her. If that’s how he caught it, anyway. This was no STD he’d ever heard of.

    The doctor told him there was nothing wrong with him, that it was psychosomatic, but he knew he wasn’t crazy. The doctor assured him that psychosomatic did not necessarily mean crazy, but he said it with this uncertain look in his eye, this look that spelled out crazy as clearly as a prescription label.

    Get some rest, Dave, the doctor told him.

    But Dave couldn’t rest. Even if he quit his job and put blackout curtains all over every window in his house, there was no way he could rest, because the things were crawling inside of him.

    They crawled across everything in some kind of anatomical takeover.
