The dark amplified the sounds of snuffling and growling outside the door. She heard fabric rip—a shirt maybe? The sounds grew quieter for a moment, other than the wet lapping of liquid that pulled at her. What were they doing? How bad was it?
She bit down hard to stifle her whimpers. She could cry, daddy said that was okay. Just don't make a sound. No noises at all. If she did they would hear her. They would find her. They would...
Nayelle turned and peered up through the tiny hole in the floor. The shadows danced across the ceiling and wall that she could see. It made her gasp in fear. Were they moving? Were they coming for her? Daddy said the steer would be enough, it always was. But he'd been wrong. This time they wanted more. They wanted something different. Something on two legs instead of four.
The noises began to grow again. Mom and dad were up there, but after the screaming and the gunshot earlier she hadn't heard them. Just the snarling and growling. And feeding. They were dead. They had to be. Killed by the beasts in the hills. And she would be too if she made a noise.
A louder growl made the other noises stop. Footsteps above her made the wooden planks above her creak. Dirt fell between the cracks, threatening to make her sob. It was getting closer. The falling dust was replaced with a new sound: dripping. She peered through the dark crawlspace trying to figure out what it was.
The creaking boards grew
