Part I

Mythbusting The Bad Rap On Dating Apps

I remember being told many times that writing a how-to guide on dating apps for women seeking long term relationships was going to be an uphill battle. A fool’s errand, even. An utter waste of time. Why don’t you write about DIY garden boxes, or building a bike from scratch? You know, something productive? It’s no secret dating apps have a bad rap, and I understood immediately why so many people, guys and girls, were so critical of the idea. Part of this negativity undoubtedly stems from a hyper-critical media which will try to make a quick buck off of any trend it can with a controversial headline. In 2015 Vanity Fair, for example, published a scathing article denouncing Tinder as the advent of the ‘dating apocalypse.’ But do claims like this bear any meaningful weight? It’s a valid question.

If you’ve spent any small amount of time on Tinder, Hinge, Bumble, or any other popular dating app for even 15 minutes you probably already know what I’m talking about. The experience for most women is the same. You hear about Tinder from a friend and get a little curious, so you install it. You swipe left on a couple profiles and suddenly encounter one guy that’s actually pretty cute or who has a bio that makes you smile, so you swipe right. Lo and behold, it’s a match. But then a few messages into your chat conversation things start to get vulgar, and the guy turns out to be a complete weirdo, creep, or brainless frat boy. You may shrug off the encounter the first time it happens easily enough, but then it happens again. And then it happens AGAIN! And again, and again, and again. After the sixth or seventh time you’ve made up your mind: these apps are nothing more than digital amusement parks for lonely, horny males looking for a quick lay.  They swarm in with cheap, half-assed pickup lines or sometimes no pick up line at all; just a vulgar, cut to the chase request for sex, and then they feel insulted when their feelings are not reciprocated. Shameless, tactless, hopeless. And that’s when you delete the app. Good riddance. Right?

Well if you’ve purchased this book some part of you deep down inside believes there’s still hope. And I’m here to tell you that absolutely there is! You just have to know that there’s a system and like any system there are rules you need to play by. Once you know the rules, you can work the system in your favor. But that doesn’t mean your dating app experience will always be 100% creep free.

A New Era

Let’s not beat around the bush, the dating app bad rap came about for valid reasons, at least initially. What started out as a hook up app used mostly by college students across the country is now finding itself several years later having a little trouble cutting ties with its past, even if the statistics conclude that dating apps are NOT in fact just for hookups any longer (we’ll explore more of that in a bit.)  What perpetuate the hook up app stereotypes nowadays are the bad apples. And unfortunately, these bad apples aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. They like the convenience, the anonymity, and the control that a dating app can provide. But they are not worth sabotaging your own quest for happiness by deleting an app that still has plenty of good guys using it every single day. Bad apples exist in real life too, ladies.  They’re everywhere!  That’s why when you find someone worthwhile it’s called a catch.  And if you’re shrugging off dating apps because you think the majority of men are just looking for a one night fling, you’re not only shrugging off one of the most substantial evolutions in the entire history of courtship, but also access to a huge crop of potentially amazing men that want to date YOU.  Sound like BS? Let me prove it to you.

Who am I

My name is A.J. Nelson and I run the Not Here for Hookups! blog. The blog, and this book, were ideas which culminated after hearing story after story from friends and family about their Tinder dating experiences. Some stories chronicled laughably bad, horrible date experiences that you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy. Dates which started as matches on
