    About the Author

    Chapter 1

    Where am I? I ask.

It doesn’t answer. It doesn’t even look down at me.

    Hey, where am I?

Shut up! It says, Stupid mutt.

It scrapes a shiny stick on a flat thing that it has in its paws. It has strange paws. They have almost no fur on them, and their fingers are long and slender. I guess I never paid much attention. Lately I’ve had time. I’ve been stuck here a long while. They put me in a strange box made of shiny sticks. There are a few of us here in rows of these boxes. I know what I’m telling you. You don’t want to get on their bad side. Some of the other dogs that came through here have disappeared; who knows what kind of magic the fat one worked on them. Said Gray Face.

They were probably taken out to the woods and left for dead too, said Brown paws.

    Do you think? I ask.

"Every once in a while groups of humans come in and look at all of
