Chapter 1
Where am I?
I ask.
It doesn’t answer. It doesn’t even look down at me.
Hey, where am I?
Shut up!
It says, Stupid mutt.
It scrapes a shiny stick on a flat thing that it has in its paws. It has strange paws. They have almost no fur on them, and their fingers are long and slender. I guess I never paid much attention. Lately I’ve had time. I’ve been stuck here a long while. They put me in a strange box made of shiny sticks. There are a few of us here in rows of these boxes. Gray face is next to me on my right side, Brown paws on my left. They’re both older than me. Gray face sys he was brought here for biting. It’s one of the creatures that put us here, a small one. He tried to explain that he was defending himself, but they didn’t listen. I think he thinks they are going to hurt him. I don’t understand how though, Gray face is a big one. Brown Paws is a small girl, really small. Her head is tiny and bulbous; she’s also got quite the attitude. She said her human, that’s what she calls them, set her loose in the woods. They never came back for her. I find that hard to believe, humans have usually been good to me. Except for this fat one that won’t tell me where I am.
They never say, not that we could understand their language anyway
said Brown Paws.
Don’t get it angry, you won’t like it if it’s angry,
says Gray face.
I think you’re worrying too much,
I said.
I know what I’m telling you. You don’t want to get on their bad side. Some of the other dogs that came through here have disappeared; who knows what kind of magic the fat one worked on them.
Said Gray Face.
They were probably taken out to the woods and left for dead too,
said Brown paws.
Do you think?
I ask.
"Every once in a while groups of humans come in and look at all of
