About this ebook

For thousands of years people have sought out gurus and spiritual masters in order to gain spiritual enlightenment. However, the consciousness of humankind has now risen to the point where each person can be their own spiritual master; the wisdom that has been hidden within us is now within the reach of all who know how to access it. The Road Home shows how to access this wisdom by listening to the guidance of your Higher Self: the part of you still in contact with your Source, or God, the narrator of these two volumes.

Channelled entirely via the Higher Self of the author (Hypnotherapist and Spirit Release Therapist, Brett Farrell) The Road Home is a concise guide to the step-by-step process of the liberation of consciousness from the constraints of the ego. It allows you to take off the filters of the mind and see the world from an entirely different and empowered point of view. The evolution of humankind demands that everyone will eventually take this journey when ready to do so. These two volumes also provide a radical reassessment of the nature of our relationship with the universe and the entity we call God, and offer the opportunity to free ourselves forever from fear, guilt, self doubt and anger, and achieve the deep peace, power and delight of enlightenment.

The Road Home - Brett Farrell

    PREFACE

    THE WRITING PROCESS

Many people have shown interest in how I received and transcribed the information in these volumes; so I will say a little about that process before discussing the profound ramifications the The Road Home's teachings hold for the spiritual aspirant.

In 1992, in a regular meditation session, I was instructed to record information I would receive in future sessions. At that time I had been working with A Course In Miracles * for several years, practising its recommendations for stilling my mind and listening to the Voice of the Holy Spirit (regarded as the voice of the Self in The Road Home). I had recorded personal information received in meditation on many occasions, but whereas that process had been fairly casual, this instruction had a formality that promised something unusual. I abandoned the pen, sat in front of my computer and without knowing what to expect, cleared my mind and typed what came to me - the first page of The Road Home (the first volume of which I originally published as The Practice of Approach To God).

It is important to note that this process did not involve me becoming a vehicle through which another entity could manifest; the information I received was a direct expression of the part of my mind that still had direct contact with Universal Consciousness, or God. Thus the message in The Road Home is the Word of God, subject to the limitations of language and the mind through which it manifested. My role has been to prepare myself to receive this message and then make it available to others so that they, too, may know they are divine and learn to access that same universal wisdom.

The process of receiving this information involved intense concentration in order to keep egoistic thoughts at bay (thoughts arising from a belief in separation and limitation) so that they would not interfere with the information being presented to my conscious mind. This resulted in me having only a vague idea of what I had written. In the early days, I was occasionally overcome by doubt, and first thing in the morning read the previous night’s work, terrified that it would not make sense. One reason for my fear was that for the preceding five years I had directed my life by the guidance I received in meditation. If the text I was now producing was gibberish or sentimental twaddle, then I had wasted five years. However, the work not only made sense, but proved to be a profound discourse on the process of enlightenment: information all too rare in Western spiritual literature. The Road Home also contains a wealth of esoteric information about spiritual and secular matters: an essential intellectual foundation for the sincere spiritual aspirant.

Initially, I was also doubtful about the nature of the information I was receiving because I found it difficult to believe I was a worthy recipient of such information; someone else maybe, but not I. Hesitation about accepting one’s spiritual worth is extremely common, and one of the obstacles to spiritual growth dealt with in these two volumes. It is an obstacle that you will overcome as you work through this book.

    THE SEARCH

The Road Home had its genesis in my own search for happiness and for answers to the big questions in life; for example, does an individual life have purpose? Why is happiness so hard to achieve? Did I exist before I was conceived and will I survive death? Is there a God, and does he she or it really punish people? Is suffering necessary? Has the universe always existed, and, if not, what preceded it? I needed to arrive at the answers to these questions myself—to have my own experience—before I could find peace within myself

I discovered that beyond superstition, religion and the constraints of scientific theory there has always existed a great spiritual tradition of self-realisation, or enlightenment.

The process of enlightenment is the exploration of Self and puts you in touch with the wisdom of the Creative Force of which you are an extension, in which your Self resides. It is there that you will find answers to the questions that trouble your heart, for you are talking directly to the entity you call God. For instance, you can learn why you have incarnated at this particular time; how to deal with the character traits that trip you up time after time; what happens to you when you die; how to stop being a victim and be happy. Your life can move off into a new and incredibly creative direction as a result of this process.

The Road Home is a guide for those brave souls who want to participate in that great spiritual tradition, the exploration of the real Self, which is the very essence of spiritual practice. And it maintains that until you undertake this process with full awareness, your best intentions will be shot through with falsity, and doubt and fear will be your companions.

To take up the challenge of self-discovery offered in this book means discarding your existing ideas about the nature of God, Creation, the physical universe and, more importantly, about who and what you really are. It is a journey of expansion, a relinquishment of the limits your culture has placed on you, an exhilarating and exciting adventure of expanded awareness. Admittedly, you will sometimes be frightened as you move into unfamiliar territory, but you can never embark on a journey without facing your fear of the unknown. This is a journey everyone will take when they are strong enough to do so and have come to realise the futility of continuing with their present limited view of the world.

Remember, this is a journey back home, back to your roots. The gentle voice for God will entice you, cajole you, prod, support and encourage you. It will redirect you, surprise you, applaud you and push you, but it will never, never give up on you. Your place stands waiting for you, and the world has need of teachers who can teach from the strength of their own experience. The aim of The Road Home is to save you time by showing you how to make every moment of your life a step towards the joy, knowledge, power and peace that accompanies spiritual enlightenment, and to ensure that you are not overwhelmed by the task and do not lose heart.

    A BRIEF NOTE ON THEORY

The voice in The Road Home is unequivocal in its insistence that the aim of your life is the attainment of unqualified enlightenment. It maintains that you are not truly sane until you have cast off all traces of self-image and stand bare in the full knowledge of your spiritual identity: "You are not a body. You are not a mind that changes from moment to moment." (Volume 1, Chapter 16), and that this is the only way to achieve the lasting peace and joyfulness that is your natural condition.

It is important to understand that enlightenment is achieved with the recognition that your essential Self is an extension of the Mind of God, and is, therefore, not different from God and shares the qualities of God. Your Self is unchanging, unlimited and inviolable. Therefore, you do not achieve enlightenment by re-making or bettering yourself. The process of enlightenment is the overcoming of your self-imposed belief in your own littleness and vulnerability. It is to stop choosing, however unwittingly, to be a victim of the world and God, and to experience your pure and glorious reality.

The voice you will learn to listen to as you work with The Road Home is your own voice: the voice of your real, eternal, unqualified Self. You may believe that God, whatever you conceive God to be, is remote and not bothered about communicating with someone as insignificant as you. If you do believe that, you are mistaken, for an intimate connection with the source of your being already exists within you, and your conscious awareness and identification with that connection is your spiritual destiny, and its achievement, the purpose of your life.

The Road Home explains that you choose a guide to lead you through life from a limited field of two. This process is not optional: everyone does it constantly. On the one hand, you can choose to follow the guidance of the Self and realise your inherent nature as a divine being. You then experience yourself with great clarity, peace and without the arising of tendencies, desires or subconscious motivations that obscure the conscious awareness of the unadorned Self. You will experience your Self as the unqualified essence of your being, which is forever at one with, and not different from, the creative energy called God. Life will cease to be problematical, painful or associated with loss of any kind. To listen to your real Self is to journey towards enlightenment and in doing so transcend suffering, doubt, guilt and fear and realise that you are Love itself and possess all the power at loves disposal.

On the other hand, you can choose the thinking of the ego—the limited, unstable, anxious and guilt-ridden self-image you have make for your self, and which forms the substratum of what you currently consider to be your personality. Then you will see yourself as isolated from your spiritual Source and in competition with other egos in a world of limited resources. You will perceive yourself as randomly attacked by friends, partners, governments, bureaucracies and enemies for example, and subject to accidents and acts of God. Such a vulnerable and victimised self will obviously need defending, and you will defend yourself, both single-handedly and in collaboration with others. Your life then becomes an ongoing battle punctuated by periods of apparent peace: in reality, periods of respite in which you prepare yourself for the next challenge to your self-image and the protective environment you have constructed around yourself. Such a state of affairs has come to be regarded as normal and is obviously the predominant mode of operation for most people at present.

Volume one of The Road Home is concerned primarily with helping you establish a profound, liberating and all-embracing spiritual practice that bypasses the ego's disappointing gifts. Volume two deals with the obstacles and defence mechanisms that inevitably arise in your mind as you begin your spiritual ascent; for as you begin to re-evaluate the very notion of who you are, you will inevitably experience resistance to that process. For instance, at a subconscious level you will fear punishment at the hands of a vengeful god, whose role you believe you have usurped by re-creating yourself in your own image. It can be surprisingly difficult to recognise the extent to which your actions arise from a subconscious belief that you are guilty and deserving of punishment, and how often you project that guilt and fear on to the world around you.

Volume two also expands on many of the themes raised in volume one: the most important being the continuing development of your concept of God. Many fears and inconsistencies of thought must be overcome as this shift in understanding occurs.

When you are free, you become a benefactor to the world rather than a contributor to the problems that bedevil the world; you no longer deny your need for undefended intimacy with your brothers and sisters and God; you truly live rather than merely survive, and death ceases to be a final, painful sacrifice at the end of a life of sacrifice, and becomes a natural and peaceful transition to the next phase of life. All people will eventually overcome the world; that is, they will cease to identify with their egos' thought system and remain only as the Self. Then the world will be transformed before their eyes as it reflects the love in their minds.

This book presents a path that is particularly suited to anyone who comes from a Judaeo-Christian based culture. However, you will detect in the book many ideas conventionally associated with eastern spirituality, for the experiences offered here are universal and not limited by a particular spiritual tradition.

Although The Road Home gives information on such topics as child rearing, loneliness and sexual relationships, it does not claim to be an authority on any issue. Its aim is to show you how to make decisions by referring to the authority of your own divinity as expressed in the Self. As such, it is a signpost pointing to the shortest route to enlightenment—trusting the guidance of the Self.

When your identification with the Self is complete, you will know that the will of your Self is not different from the Will of God. Then peace is possible, for there will be no conflict within you. Then you will be as a light in a dark world and will assist in the establishment of a culture of God/Self- realisation. Never has there been a greater need for a book showing how to achieve that peace - the radiant happiness that frees people from the dark passions and grievances of the ego.

Welcome to the greatest adventure of them all. I wish you every success on your journey. Go forward in confidence. It does not matter where you begin nor whether your willingness to be happy is wholehearted; your Self will direct you very specifically in every situation until you are strong enough to transcend suffering and live with conscious awareness of the love, joy and peace that is your reality.

    A WORD ON STRUCTURE

The two volumes of The Road Home each have 52 chapters: one for each week of the year. This ordering is not meant to be prescriptive; however, there are themes that develop in each volume, and over the two volumes, which means there is great value in a sequential reading, regardless of the undoubted value of opening the book at any page when in need of inspiration, encouragement or support. This construction suggests an approach to the work that allows time for ideas to be considered and then brought into practice in daily life. Psychological defences always arise as honest spiritual practice is engaged. Therefore, spiritual practice is best nourished by a gradual familiarisation with, and constant exposure to, new concepts, thereby reducing the anxiety associated with their assimilation.

The structure of The Road Home and the loving support and the encouragement to practice that it offers are designed to facilitate a massive re-evaluation of your current thought system and provide the highest wisdom available as a replacement.

    A WORD ON LANGUAGE

It is worth noting that the word Creation as used in The Road Home does not refer to a physical creation, but to the sum total of spiritual entities that exist as an extension of the mind of God, and which share the attributes of God. Words such as Christ and Holy One are capitalised as aspects of Creation that can no longer be differentiated from their Source or from the totality of Creation. Other than that I have attempted to minimise capitalisation.

The term Self refers to our real or essential, unchanging, unqualified identity. The Self is consciousness finding its expression in the world via the mind. The mind may choose to identify with the Self or the ego. The ego consists of the illusory ideas we have developed about ourselves. The basis of these ideas is the belief in separation and vulnerability.

The Holy Spirit can be regarded as the voice of the Self. It is worth noting here that in the early stages of spiritual development, definitions of words are important to provide an intellectual understanding, which is, initially, the foundation for practice. But as practice is entered into more profoundly, the differences between words such as God, Christ, Holy Spirit and Self become increasingly irrelevant as it becomes apparent that there is only God, complete and undifferentiated.

The phrase sons and daughters refers to people as individual self-conscious aspects of Creation

The Road Home is in the form of a direct address by God in which God refers to Him/Herself both in the first person as Me and I and in the third person as God. I believe that, in part, this occurs as a means to assist readers to re-evaluate the concept of God as a separate and remote entity, and realise that God exists in and as the Self.

I have avoided the term Son of God, which for many people signifies a special status for Jesus, a status unattainable by humankind. The Road Home does not support the idea that Jesus is God and in that sense unlike us. It considers that idea to be an institutionalised, egoic defence against enlightenment. The opposite is the truth: we, and our brother, Jesus, are part of the Christ, which is Creation. Eventually, unqualified unity with God will become our experience, no matter how stoutly we defend ourselves against that idea here in the world of the flesh. And as I mentioned earlier in the preface, The Road Home is designed to accelerate the onset of that experience. God's speed to you.

    THE ROAD HOME

    VOLUME ONE

The world is not your home, nor is Heaven foreign to you; it is from here you came. You have forgotten your home while dwelling in a strange place, surrounded by seeming dangers and hemmed in on every side by the forces of evil. There is no evil, and the strange place you inhabit is of your own making, existing only in your mind. Relinquish your hold on the world and it will disappear in a happy instant.

    Saving Time

It is the One you call God speaking to you now, your Creator, and this book is a manual for those who want to realise their spiritual destiny by following the ways of God. It is not My intention to instruct you in every detail of behaviour in these volumes; rather, it is My intention to remind you how vital it is to have the correct approach to Me. Without the correct approach you will waste a great deal of time, and, although all are saved eventually, it is a tragedy that so many of you take such a long time to realise that enlightenment is at hand, waiting on your acceptance.

Do not take salvation into your own hands; leave it to Me and let Me be the judge of what you truly need, for if you knew what your real needs were you would have already joined Me in Heaven. Eliminate all that stands between you and Me. Do not delay in your approach to Me, for I wait for you with the open arms of a lover.

There is no benefit in delaying your enlightenment by exploring the unsatisfactory world of desire; so let Me guide you gently as I instruct you in the correct way to enter My Presence. Nothing else will bring you lasting peace or contentment. Bless yourself by listening to what I say, and come to Me quickly.

    -2-

The Practice of Approach to God

I want to establish you in a practice of approach to Me that will ensure your rapid entry into the Kingdom of Heaven. It is no longer necessary for you to struggle in confusion, not knowing which way to turn, certain only that peace will elude you and the pleasures you seek will be taken from you. Be at peace, for those times are behind you, and it is no longer necessary to weep for lost causes and shattered hopes.

The time is near when the world will awaken to My Presence, and your spiritual practice will prepare you for this event. Listen to what I say for My message contains great wisdom, and through it you will experience peace. Accept My admonitions gracefully and My recommendations with alacrity, for I want you with Me, not lost to My sight.

From here on, I will rely on you to see the wisdom of what I say to you. I will let you choose what you will do; there is no compulsion, only My heartfelt desire that you will come to Me in peace. Then I will know you once again as I have always known you, and you will know Me as I have always been.

    -3-

    The World As Your Footstool

Your approach to Me should be one of devotion. It is not appropriate to approach Me with pride or fear in your heart. Pride is not called for in the Presence of the One Who gave you all that you have and Who knows you better than you know yourself: devotion is called for. If you come with pride you inevitably come with fear, for they go hand in hand.

Be devoted to Me, and I will bless your life, not as a reward but because it is My natural desire to do so. If I do not shower you with blessings it is not because I do not wish to, but only because you are not a fit receptacle. You do not pour strong wine into an old skin, for the skin will break and the wine will be lost. Purify yourself through devotion to Me. Let no other thought occupy your mind but the thought that you want Me in all My fullness and glory.

Approach Me with the humility of a true devotee; seek to determine My Will in every circumstance. Approach Me in humility, and I will lift you up and you will be one with Me and no longer exist as a servant. This can only occur when you have given up the false notion of pride. Until then you will recognise no will but your own, and exercise no power except the puny power you believe you have snatched from Me in the insane belief that you have usurped My position and taken My place. Cease such madness and look to where your safety lies. Why deny your rightful inheritance and settle for what is uncertain and, ultimately, unsatisfying? I offer you the world as your footstool. Why settle for the parched little corner that with all its cruel limitations you still defend as your universe?

Come to Me in true devotion, see My glory, and experience My power. I have great faith in you; I know you will come. Do not delay, for Heaven is not complete without you. Your place stands waiting for you; come and fill it. All of Heaven watches and waits for you to make this decision. Release your hold on the madness of the world and come to Me. I am waiting for you.

    -4-

    Pleasure

Be at peace; all is well. There is no need to be fearful, for there is no harm in Me: I am love itself. Let your life rest in My care and keeping.

Do you believe I will care for you and watch over your every movement, or does that thought generate fear in your heart, the fear that My Presence may threaten your vices? For you do defend your vices from Me, fearing that My love may not prove as satisfying as the fleeting pleasure your vices offer you. But do you think that what is temporary and always brings pain and guilt in its wake can measure up to the eternal bliss of My love? Or that the world can offer you anything other than temporary respite from pain? Do you think I will leave you comfortless in Heaven? No; in Me alone can you find the peace you seek.

There is no peace but My peace. There is no love but My love. How long before you realise this? How long before you lay aside your tawdry, childish ‘pleasures’ and pluck the fruits of love I offer you? Every time you indulge in pleasure that does not originate in Me, you deny yourself My love and the healing power of My grace. You choose your own littleness in its place, and by choosing to be small, separate and vulnerable you deny Me as your loving Creator.

Stop looking for pleasure in the world, and accept the joy that comes from embracing My Will. Only in joy can you find freedom. You will not find freedom in the hidden, guilt-inducing pleasures you use to take your mind off the cruelty of the world you have made for yourself.

Put aside what is beneath you. Rise and walk with Me. Do you think this is beyond you? Do you believe I created you to be apart from Me, to not know Me, to live in darkness outside the glory of My Being, clutching at fleeting pleasures to assuage the pain of your existence? No; I created you to be at one with Me, not hidden from Me in clouds of guilt and fear. I created you to walk with Me as friends walk down the street together.

Put aside whatever keeps you separate from Me and accept the riches I offer you. Experience the joy, healing and peace that exist only in Me. You have your existence in Me and all I have is yours for the taking. I withhold nothing that is good. But first you must be purified or you will not appreciate the worth of the richest gifts and therefore will be unable to receive them. Put aside limitation and accept the eternal in its place.

I punish no one. I ask only that you be ready, willing and fit to receive the gifts I offer you. I want you to have My gifts, so put aside small things and receive your rightful inheritance. Just as one does not dress a dog in a suit, so one cannot give riches to those who believe they are poor, for they cannot see the value in what they receive.

Think carefully when tempted to step outside of My Presence to seek your pleasure. Doing this prevents you from finding, and keeping, the everlasting joy of the heavenly realms that exist within your mind. Dedicate your action to Me and a profound bliss will become a part of your everyday existence. Then you will understand that you are one with Me.

Find your pleasure in My name and it will become a blessing to you. Anything done in My name becomes a blessing. Do not forget Me, for I have not forgotten you. I will call you until you cease to hide from Me and lift your eyes to Mine.

    -5-

The World is Not Your Home

At the end of time there will be no coming and going, but only the eternal bliss of My Presence. That will be enough, for there is nothing beyond that. This is hard for you to understand at present, but in time (or more precisely, when time ends) you will experience the awesome Presence of My Will in all its fullness. That time is as near, or as far, as you wish it to be; but only you know the onset of that time, for it is determined by you and by you alone. I am with you in all things; yet it is up to you when you come to Me. I wait on you for I cannot change; it is you who must, and will, change. All of Heaven waits for you, and rejoices with every step of your approach.

The process of relinquishment may seem to take time, but only from your perspective. From My point of view, when you have decided, it is done. Decide now, and speed your return to Me.

There is no point in continually pursuing the unachievable, and the goal of autonomy is unachievable. The pleasures you hoped to receive from it can never really bring you anything but guilt. As your Creator, I do not condemn you for following this course; I merely wait patiently for you to return to Me. However, you have delayed your return much longer than was expected, so I have sent My heralds out to remind you that you are not truly at home where you are. The writer of this dissertation has realised his full potential, and I will use him to remind you that you can achieve what he has achieved. He is no different from you; it is merely that he has seen the futility of pursuing a lost cause and has turned his head to Me. This decision has brought him fulfillment.

In your world, all things are made by the power of decision. Decide for Me now and let your blessings accumulate, blessing upon blessing, until you can no longer count them. The world will then become a place of such loveliness for you that you will not understand how such a state can exist. You are only one step away from this.

Decide for Me now and do not look back to your old ways of sin. Do not be tempted by what has never brought you happiness. Let My promises tempt you, for they offer you life. All else offers death, and there is no joy in that. Choose the joy of eternal life in Me. Delay no more; it is insanity to do so. Come in peace, now. I await you with open arms.

    -6-

    Peace

You cannot attain the peace of God in the absence of God. This may seem obvious; yet, many try to achieve this. Many search for peace without knowing Me, or while actively avoiding Me in their lives. Their attempts must
