CHAPTER ONE

DANNY MCDOW needed a voice.

Not that he couldn’t speak. He could. Just like any other guy, words came out of his mouth and people heard them.

But the problem was his words were plain. He spoke like a machine, but actually machines spoke with more interest than he did. With a machine, you knew a machine was talking.

When Danny spoke, his tone was flat, his words clear, and nothing at all was distinct.
