About this ebook
Joseph J. Costantino
As a kid growing up in Park Slope, Brooklyn, I was fascinated by movies, music, and literature. I always wanted to write as the great writers did. Songs, screenplays, and novels always held my attention. I began writing songs for my band back in the seventies. Great stories from my past and a vivid imagination are the driving force behind my writing.

Chapter 1
T om boarded the train and found a seat across from a slim brunette. He could not help but stare at her as the train passed from station to station. She was slightly built, brown eyes and dark complexion. What drew his attention to her mostly was the fragrance in the air which surrounded her like an exotic aura. There was something else that fascinated him. She wore a beret that seemed more popular years ago, not much the style nowadays. She carried several shopping bags. Each bag had a pink tissue protruding from the top. Clothes perhaps? He couldn’t help but look at her. He tried to turn away but to no avail.
She smiled at him as she left her seat. She held on to the pole until the train stopped moving. This was his stop, he made his way to the door. They were standing side by side. As they exited, she stumbled and dropped her bags outside on the train platform. He reached to help her. She handed him a bag.
These are kind of heavy
, he said.
She smiled, Shoes and a handbag.
They walked together down the block. With a free hand, he introduced himself.
I’m Tom Penfull.
She shook his hand and smiled.
I’m Yolande Bilotra. Do you live in the city?
Actually, I live three blocks away from here on 91st Street
That’s funny, I have an apartment on 94th Street
.
Your name sounds Spanish,
I was born in Basque Country in Bilbao, Spain. Are you familiar with that part of Spain?
Vaguely, he said. I’ve seen documentaries on TV. Well I’m from the Midwest. Evansville, Indiana. What brings you to New York
?
That’s a long story, for another day.
She said offhandedly.
Oh, so there will be another day?
Why not
, she said. You seem like a harmless enough person. Well here is my stop.
You can call me if you like.
Tom paused,
O.K.!
They exchanged phone numbers. As she was walking away he heard her shout, Texting would be best!
As he walked home his steps felt lighter than air, but he did not want to get his hopes up. At home, he sat in front of the TV. He couldn’t concentrate. He was fixed on Yolande. Did she have a boyfriend? What did she do for a living? What was the ‘long
