Chapter one

Chief inspector Sam Abbot sat at his new desk in his new office. He was studying the file that lay in front of him. It had been a couple of months since his promotion, a reward for his exemplary work in putting the Don Bartolo gang behind bars. I was seated opposite him.

I feel a bit guilty taking most of the credit Ben, after all, without your assistance this wouldn’t have been possible, said Sam.

Yes I helped but I couldn’t have done much without all your manpower Sam, and anyway it’s my choice to remain anonymous.

Well let’s just be happy in the knowledge that we both did a great job, said Sam.

Yep, I’m happy with that, now what was it you wanted me for?

Mostly I wanted to know if you are still keen to work with me because if you are, I have an assignment coming up very soon, said Sam fiddling with the file that was in front of him, it was marked ‘Confidential’.

Yes I am Sam well I think I am, as long as I am out of the limelight.

That’s great news and is Lucy still happy for you to be involved? he asked.

Sam she is happy if I am happy.

My anonymity suited Sam just fine. He had set up an elite group who would be used in undercover operations. The fact that they, well, we would be undercover, anonymity was of the essence. It would make it easier to infiltrate any groups of public enemy’s such as Don Bartolo’s gang. Sam had code named our group ‘Armoury’. I think my ability may have influenced him.

I would like to arrange a get together of our little band of brothers so you can all get to know each other, but not here in our workplace somewhere more relaxed and somewhere where you can perhaps give them a little glimpse of your abilities. Any suggestions? asked Sam.

How about my place tomorrow? We could have an informal get together there and I’ll throw in dinner, I suggested.

Great, I was hoping you would suggest that. I’ll bring the Beer and Chivas, he chuckled.

I won’t say no to that, I said as I stood to leave.

Good, tomorrow then, about sevenish ok?

Yes seven will be fine. See you tomorrow, I said as I left the office.

As I drove home I found myself getting excited about Lucy and myself going out tonight. We had not been back to ‘Mangia Bene’, Franco’s restaurant since the episode with Don Bartolo’s men. We had been meaning to but what with one thing and another had not managed it. As I parked the car, Lucy appeared at the door to greet me.

Hello darling, had a good day? I asked as I walked towards her.

Yes quite busy actually, I’m getting quite a client base now, and I’m also getting to know the area, she answered as she kissed me at the door. How did your meeting with Sam go?

It was both interesting and exciting, I answered hesitantly.

I explained to Lucy what the situation is. I explained about the elite task force that Sam had put together and that I would be a part of it.

I’m hoping you are still ok with my involvement.

Ben I’m not happy with the danger that it will involve, but I know it’s what you really want to do, so for that reason I am one hundred percent behind you. All I ask is that you be careful, said Lucy looking at me with pleading eyes.

Of course I’ll be careful it’s me who is the dangerous one! I said laughing and giving Lucy a hug.

So we have a full house for dinner tomorrow then;

Yes, you don’t mind do you?

No of course not, it will be good to meet the people you will be working with.

We busied ourselves getting ready for our night out. We were both looking forward to our visit to ‘Mangia Bene’ Franco’s restaurant. We were showered and dressed and decided to have a drink in the lantern housing before we left. It was so relaxing up there with the stunning views and a great place to watch the sunset from, but we had missed it tonight.

Lucy are you really comfortable with my new career for want of a better word? I asked Lucy once again, I needed more reassurance.

Oh Ben not again, I am proud of you and the fact you have chosen this worthwhile path, and I am definitely right behind you. Yes I will worry about your wellbeing but that is only natural, and to prove how much I am supporting your decision, I have something for you. Just wait here a minute, said Lucy as she went down the spiral staircase to our bedroom. She soon returned with a package.

I was going to give you this next week on your birthday, but I think the situation warrants my giving it to you now, said Lucy smiling and handing me the package. Happy birthday for next week and this should prove once and for all that I am happy.

I took the package, it was heavy, and I hurriedly opened it. It was a huge hardback book. I read the title that was embossed on the front in Gold letters, ‘Weapons of the World’. I looked up at Lucy then back at the book. Wow this is great! This is perfect it’s going to be so useful, I said as I put it down and put my arms around Lucy. I’m sorry I ever doubted you darling, I said and I kissed her.

Great, now can we go and eat I’m starving, she said taking
