    J essica?

    That’s me! I pulled open the door to the Prius and slid into the backseat. As I buckled myself in, the driver — the app said his name was Kristoff — pointed to the rideshare app on his phone. Is this the correct address? he asked. 

    I nodded. Yep. The Masonic Lodge.

    He nodded and pulled back onto the road. Got a Satanic ritual to get to?

    I did a double take. What?

    He winced. Sorry. Bad joke. You know, they say Masons are all satanists or whatever … some sort of conspiracy theory or something.

    An awkward chuckle escaped my lips. Oh. Well, I’m not a Mason. I hesitated before adding, My grandpa was. The lodge is hosting his memorial service.

    His face fell. I’m so sorry, he said. I didn’t mean to—

    It’s okay, I said. It was an awkward moment, but it’s not like I was offended. Grandpa John had been old, and his death wasn’t exactly unexpected. I was sad to be losing him, but I wasn’t overly sensitive, either, especially when Kristoff had had no idea of the circumstances of my trip. And don’t worry, I added, offering a sly smile. I won’t let it affect your rating. Or your tip.

    He shot me a glance in the rearview mirror and the look on his face was equal parts relief and amusement. Phew, he said. I was sweating. He hesitated a moment, as if unsure whether he should shut up or not. What was your grandfather’s name? he asked tentatively.
