HEROES,
SERVICE AND SACRIFICE
White Crosses
I stand before the crosses white, they gleam like stars on a darkened night.
Rows and rows of these I see, reaching back through history. Battles raged on far off lands, ocean seas and shifting sand.
Echo’s fill the air around, mortar shells and bugles sound. The past and present mix as one, as silence falls on battles done.
We look with eyes at scenes long past, at moments etched in bright stained glass. At photos ragged, aged with time, holding still their battle line.
The faces pale with fear and strife, each soldier vowed to give their life. And still they fight, their hearts so brave, I see them in each starlit grave.
Their names are etched on crosses white, a flag to mark each fallen knight. In worlds afar they lie in rest, these souls of ours that gave their best.
With hearts of steel and tender touch we owe them all so very much. For miles walked in heat and cold, for bearing all their hearts could hold.
White crosses mark each tender loss; freedom comes at painful cost.
The echo of a bugle sounds, the sharp retort of rifle rounds. And in the light white crosses bear reminders of the soldiers there.

Echoes
Boots of soldiers marching, like heartbeats in my ear. Always moving onward, toward battles far and near.
We hear them in our memory, and see them on parade in pictures grayed and tattered, with edges bent and frayed.
They move to sounds of drumming, to music with a beat designed to match the cadence of boot clad marching feet.
We watch in pride their passing; with tears we bless their lives. We mourn the loss of fathers, sons, brothers, sisters, wives.
Forever have they kept this pace on land or seas of waves. Where wreaths upon the ocean, have marked each warrior’s
