    Mornin', Mom, Tommie said.

    Most of the time Tommie Mills’ mother had to make at least a half dozen trips upstairs to his room to get him out of bed and ready for school. Tommie wasn't a morning person and he wasn't very fond of school, either. She practically had to drag him out of bed on school days. But this morning was different. Not only didn't Mrs. Mills have to wake him up, but also Tommie was showered, dressed and sitting at the kitchen table before she even had a chance to get breakfast started. Tommie's mother was concerned.

    Are you feeling OK? she asked, in a concerned voice.

    I feel great, Tommie replied. Can we have pancakes this morning?

    Mrs. Mills put her hand on Tommie's forehead to make sure he didn't have a fever. He felt fine but something wasn't quite right. Tommie definitely wasn't himself this morning. Even though his green eyes were bright and wide awake and he had a big smile on his freckled face, his mother was sure he was sick. Why else would he be so eager to go to school?

    Maybe you should stay home today, Mrs. Mills said.

    The mere suggestion that he might not get to go to school made Tommie scream loud enough to wake up half the neighborhood.

    No! I can't! Please don't make me miss school today, Tommie pleaded. Now his mother was really worried.

    What is the matter, Tommie? This isn't like you, she said.

    Lauren, Tommie's older sister, walked into the kitchen, grumpy from having been woken up by the commotion Tommie was causing. The angry expression on her face combined with the way her hair stuck out wildly in every direction made Lauren look like a mad scientist. She hated mornings even more than Tommie.

    He's excited about his stupid field trip today, Lauren yawned. He's been obsessing about it for days like a dork.

    I have not, Tommie said, and I'm not a dork.

    You have been and you are, Lauren threw back.
