    Anxiety bubbled up in my throat as I got off the subway. I was suddenly terrified about what I was on my way toward. I’d never done anything like this before, why did I think I was ready to do it now? I was going to get in trouble, I was going to make a fool of myself. Regret filled me as I approached the double glass doors and I almost ran away, but I took a strong breath in and stepped inside.

    My first day as Mr. Graham Hartley’s secretary was about to begin.

    Being a secretary was never my goal when I graduated from Cornell a month ago. I had a degree in anthropology and I still had hopes of returning for my masters and maybe even my PhD, but right now I needed money. I loved my work, but competition for the few grants out there was fierce and I knew how I looked compared to the other candidates.

    I was only twenty-one, a Christmas baby myself. No work experience to speak of, though I excelled in school.  A little shy, a bit overweight, and completely out of my element living in New York City, even after spending four years living in a one bedroom apartment with two roommates. I never really stood out, especially not in a city like New York, but somehow Mr. Hartley had seen something in me when I went for the interview.

    I don’t know why I applied for it. Most of my friends were stuck working two or even three retail jobs post-graduation. The lucky ones got in at Starbucks — at least they had benefits — but I tried for the secretary position. Hell, it was the only one I’d even applied for.

    When I got a call back I was already three weeks behind paying my roommate, Trish, my part of the rent. My parents had paid for my stuff until I graduated and then I was
