What’s it about?
What is the secret to happiness? Something so basic to humankind shouldn’t be so hard to attain, and yet the secret of happiness eludes many. In fact, for some, the idea of true, sustainable happiness seems almost mythological—a mystery in the same category as the ever-sought-after Fountain of Youth.
Happiness has been a topic of discussion in most religions, including Buddhism and Christianity, for thousands of years. The scientific community, however, seems to have had an aversion to studying the topic. As recently as the 1990s, there were very few studies exploring any positive emotions, including happiness.
Interestingly, around the time American psychiatrist Howard C. Cutler was interviewing the Dalai Lama about happiness for his book The Art of Happiness, the scientific community started taking an interest in the topic too. In 1998, Dr Martin Seligman, president of the American Psychological Association, decided to establish a new field of psychological study—positive psychology. He pointed out that during the previous half-century psychology had focused on mental illnesses, weakness, and dysfunction. Seligman decided it was time psychology broadened its horizons.
