Foreword
When my family went on a month trip out West, my parents talked to us about not getting too carried away with our ordering in restaurants. Dad asked us to be conservative in our selections since we were going to be on the road for quite awhile. Several minutes after receiving this lecture we stopped at a cafe for breakfast and carefully chose our food. After we'd all placed our orders and just as she started to step away from our table, my dad says to the waitress, Oh, yes, and a small glass of tomato juice.
The rest of the family was speechless. A small glass of tomato juice? Did he not recall anything from the earlier talk he and mom had just given to us?!?
I really don't think my dad enjoyed his tomato juice very much that morning since he had four pairs of eyes glaring at him as he tried to drink. Over the years since that time my sisters and I have received several cards from my dad, usually with a check enclosed. The card would simply read: For a small glass of tomato juice.
Through my fifty-two story-devotions I am hoping these little extras
can add to your week.

God Things
In my children’s eyes the most interesting story about my mom’s childhood was her snake story. When she was about five years old she was watching her father fish in a nearby creek. As they turned to leave, my mom stepped back on what she thought was a stick, but unfortunately for her, it was a copperhead snake. Apparently, the snake did not like being stepped on and promptly sunk its fangs into my mom’s left ankle. The poison began to affect her immediately. She became violently ill and soon her ankle was twice its normal size. They began rushing to take her to the doctor, but a sudden downpour caused flash flooding. The previously quiet, little creek was roaring and the road to the doctor’s home was impassable.
They drove to a neighbor’s house and quickly told her the situation. She hastily went out into her backyard and killed a chicken. She split the bird open and laid it on my mother’s ankle. After some time she removed the chicken which had turned totally green on the inside from absorbing the poison. This good Samaritan began cleaning and wrapping mom’s ankle. After the rains had subsided they took my mom to the doctor. He said this kind neighbor had probably saved my mom’s life. In 1991, my mom and I traveled to Preston, MO and I had the opportunity to meet the woman who had helped save my mom. How this young woman knew what to do I’ll never know. I think we can chalk this one up as a God thing. There is a lot to be said for good old common sense and quick thinking, but the loving ways she chose to lend a hand reminds us to always be a caring neighbor.
"…love your neighbor as yourself…" —Mark 12:31

Two young couples were traveling through a large metropolitan area when they spotted a fancy restaurant they had heard about for many years. They decided to stop there for dinner. When they approached the front door they saw a sign which read, Jackets and ties required.
Luckily, both gentlemen had jackets, but only one of them had thought to pack a tie. Since they desperately wanted to eat in this establishment they began to diligently search for something in their car which resembled a tie. Finally theyFinally, they decided upon a set of jumper cables. Sporting their
