I felt his eyes on me the moment I entered the room.

My heartbeat quickened as the roar of partygoers talking and laughing quickly faded into the music. I forced myself to be brave as I made my way through the crowd. The pounding beat of the music vibrated through my body as I began to dance.

Lights flashed as hot bodies swayed to the rhythm of the music. His presence grew stronger and I closed my eyes, willing him to touch me.

Moments later he was behind me. I felt his hands on mine as he lifted my arms up over my head, his body now pressed against me as our hips gyrated.

I was terrified but I liked it. My instincts screamed for me to run but instead I moaned, rolled my head back to rest on his shoulder, and closed my eyes.

I had longed for this moment. Every year, attending the Masquerade Ball, hoping he would be there, hoping that he would turn me and make me his forever.

    The Story Begins

My first Masquerade Ball was four years ago. An invitation on ivory paper with golden lettering arrived at my house. It simply stated the date of the Ball and that more instructions would soon follow. I assumed it was meant for someone else since there were no names to be found and set it aside, forgetting it until the day I found a large box on my doorstep.

I picked it up and carried it inside. I pushed the large gold bow away and found a tiny card that simply said, For You.

Hesitantly, I opened the box. Tissue paper covered the contents and as I moved the paper aside, a beautiful gown of black and green lace was revealed.

I pulled it from the box and held it to me as I looked in the mirror. It went perfect with my red hair and alabaster skin.

The sensation of being watched overwhelmed me and I spun around, but there was no one to be seen.

Hello? I spoke softly. I felt silly, but I would have sworn there was someone else in the room with me.

Shrugging off the strange sensation, I returned the dress to the box, wrapping the delicate material in the tissue paper. No way this dress is for me. I thought but when I turned around there was a note on the bed side table.

    My sweet Olivia,

I look forward to seeing you at the Ball.

There it was…my name. The gown had not been delivered by mistake.

The hair on my neck stood on end. I knew the note had not been there earlier and I looked around nervously as I tried to figure out how it had gotten there.

    * * *

I couldn’t stop thinking about my secret admirer. I wondered who it could be and what he looked like.

Every man I caught glancing my way became a suspect. The gentleman that held the door for me or the man that carelessly bumped into me as I walked to work were both candidates

Once in the office, I looked at my coworkers and carefully considered each one.

Greg had always been flirtatious with me, but he was like that with everyone. I turned my attention to Shawn, but I couldn’t imagine him going to a Masquerade Ball let alone inviting a woman out. He was far too shy.

Nope, I didn’t think my admirer was from the workplace and returned my focus to my job.

Riding the bus home that evening, a handsome, dark haired gentleman stood behind me. The bus was more crowded than usual and I held the standing passenger strap, trying not to rub against him. But it seemed the bus hit every bump along the way and my bottom continuously brushed against what I hoped was only his thigh. With flushed cheeks, I turned and smiled apologetically and that is when I saw his eyes.

The man’s eyes were the iciest shade of blue I had ever seen. I shuddered under their piercing gaze. Quickly I turned away for fear he would see how frightened and yet somehow aroused I was by his presence.

The bus hit what must have been a massive pothole and I lost my balance, falling backward.

I gasped on contact as an arm wrap securely around my waist. I felt a strong hand dig into the soft flesh of my hip as the stranger held me firmly against his body.

Thank you. I said sheepishly. Once back on my feet, I clung tightly to the hand strap and he let me go.

My pleasure. I heard him say, but I could have sworn the words had not been spoken out loud and that I had somehow heard them inside my head.

I didn’t turn to look at him. I was too frightened. I didn’t know how I knew it, but the man behind me was the one who had sent me the dress.

I chewed my bottom lip, my heart pounding in my ears. My legs were weak as the bus came to a stop. It was my stop and I swallowed hard as I looked over my shoulder for one last glimpse of those magnificent blue eyes, but to my astonishment, the man was no longer there.

I scanned the crowd as I made my way to the exit but he was nowhere to be found.

Standing on the sidewalk, I watched as the bus pulled
