    Troll Intolerance - Selena Thana

    CHAPTER 1● POV● DINLAS

The Unseelie court once ruled Ghenna, their dominion extending over land, sky, and seas. They commanded the loyalty of all born and created beings. The Unseelie court, comprised of proud and formidable races like Slaugh, Brownies, Goblins, and Pixies, existed alongside the Seelie court and humans, where life was filled with love, laughter, and shared moments of joy.

But as the war between the Seelie and Unseelie escalated, the Unseelie were forced into hiding, their existence fraught with fear and shadows. Year after year, the Unseelie species dwindled, their numbers declining rapidly, until their very existence on Ghenna became a fading ember.

We, the Unseelie, were the architects of our own demise. Driven by the desire to reign as eternal masters of the world, we manipulated the Seelie races to fulfill our bidding. However, when they fought back, we created the Human race to defend us, fueling our insatiable hunger for power and dominance.

Yet, our grand strategy contained two fatal miscalculations. The first was the creation of humans without enchantments in their souls. While they served as warriors against the Seelie races, their rapid reproduction rate surpassed that of the Seelie and Unseelie, unleashing new diseases that ravaged our kind. To evade the perilous contagions, we were compelled to cast the humans out of our abodes, abandoning them to the Seelie's care.

The second misstep was Queen Olympia's ill-fated enchantment, devised with the magic of Unseelie Slaugh and Brownies, intended to tip the scales of war in our favor. Instead, it shattered not only the souls of the Seelie but also our own, scattering them haphazardly among the Seelie and humans.

Briefly, the fighting ceased as both Seelie and Unseelie grappled with the challenge of living with fragmented souls. But the Seelie did the unexpected—they searched and reclaimed their lost soul fragments. They married, merged, and united with their Twin Flame, regardless of race. They embraced Seelie, Unseelie, and even humans, reuniting their fragmented souls. Their unyielding pursuit of wholeness allowed the Seelie to reclaim control, and the war raged on.

Unlike the Seelie, the Unseelie refrained from joining with their missing soul fragments if they belonged to a Seelie or human. Such pairings were deemed tainted and impure, sealed away within unworthy vessels or, as Unseelie law later dictated, eliminated entirely. Over time, we, the Unseelie, became devoid of emotion, our hearts growing cold. The Seelie and humans formed bonds, further diminishing our influence. The era of the Unseelie was waning, giving way to the age of humanity and Seelie.

I, Dinlas, was born in the twilight of Queen Olympia's reign. As a child, my soul was torn asunder by her enchantment, leaving me feeling empty and vulnerable. Together with my parents, we resided in a small colony of evacuees just outside Glavendenhurst Glenn, seeking refuge from the battles and horrors of the war. Being empaths and natural healers, we felt the pain and emotions of those around us, experiencing their suffering as if it were our own.

Destiny intervened shortly after my twentieth birthday, thrusting my Twin Flame, Baldor, into my path. Fated as it was, he was a Viscount Troll, sent to obliterate Glavendenhurst Glenn. He and his ruthless Troll Trolly unleashed havoc upon our town, claiming the lives of all who dared oppose them.

As empaths and healers, my parents and I were incapable of violence. We believed the war and the enslavement of the Seelie were unjust. But we could not fight for either side. The overwhelming influx of pain and sorrow rendered us helpless, forced to lie on the ground, writhing in agony until the battles subsided.

When Baldor discovered my parents and me, he immediately judged us, branding us as cowards. Our hands and feet were bound, restraining us from fleeing or fighting. The act of binding filled me and the remaining survivors with despair. And then, as expected, Baldor sentenced us to burn at sunrise, alongside the other survivors.

In that moment, I felt the call of our souls, the yearning for unity with my Twin Flame. Perhaps, I thought, if he recognized the bond between us, he might show us mercy. Hope surged within me.

Baldor reached out and grasped my arm. A pleasant tingling sensation radiated from his touch, sending waves of pleasure through my body. It was a sensation I couldn't help but savor, and I may have unintentionally let out a soft moan. As I gazed into his eyes, I knew he too recognized the connection, the missing half of his soul residing within me.

His face contorted with a multitude of emotions, turmoil evident in his every expression. Unexpectedly, I sensed hatred and pure repugnance emanating from his heart and soul. His eyes scanned my entire being before he spat in my face, proclaiming loudly for all his Trolly to hear:

This one carries my missing soul within her. I reject her! As a cowardly and filthy Brownie Unseelie, she is unworthy of me.

With that declaration, he flung me toward another Troll, whom I assumed to be his second-in-command, judging from the hostility emanating from him. Baldor instructed him with venomous words:

Ǫrvar, ensure she burns alongside the other cowards and survivors. I will search for salvageable supplies and food with the others before we return to our camp.

Baldor turned away, disappearing from my line of sight. I heard his accomplice, Ǫrvar, take a deep breath before he forcefully tightened the ropes binding me, my parents, and the rest of the survivors, compelling us to sit within a circle of stones. Dry wood lay below us, carefully arranged to stoke the flames. Ǫrvar gazed at the sky, gauging the hour. By my estimation, we had less than an hour before he would ignite the inferno. Realizing our time was running out, my father rallied the survivors with unwavering strength and conviction.

Fellow Unseelie, let us face our end with pride and dignity. Let us find solace in meditation and embrace peace.

Upon hearing my father's resolute words, I closed my eyes, willing myself to silence all thoughts and emotions. I took slow, deep breaths. Each time I sensed the Trolls placing more kindling around us, a dreadful thought would intrude—how these innocent twigs and leaves would serve as fuel for the approaching fire.

Just as I sensed the imminent rise of the sun, a pungent odor reached my nostrils—a suffocating scent of sulfur. My heart sank. Deep within, in a place I refused to acknowledge, I knew the truth. The odor could only mean one thing—a dragon. And a dragon meant our impending deaths would be excruciatingly agonizing, as the flames from a Jinn dragon would sear our flesh, boil our blood, and reduce our bones to ash.

    CHAPTER 2 ● POV● DINLAS

    12.31.00 BE (Before Earth)

Castor's sake, please stop fussing. I'm fine. I'm an Unseelie and can take care of myself. If you want to fuss over someone, go bother your Twin Flame, Calliope, I retorted, feeling a mix of irritation and determination.

Castor smiled at me, his eyes filled with pure love and enjoyment, as they wandered over to his Human Twin Flame. I followed his gaze, captivated by the sight of Calliope. Despite her torn and dirty clothes, she still looked stunning with her long jet-black hair, vibrant bright green eyes, and perfect heart-shaped lips. Her teal-colored skin veneer added an alluring touch to her overall appearance, making her truly enchanting.

In the days following Castor's rescue, I discovered a multitude of things. One revelation was that when a Jinn unites its soul with a Human or any other race, their Twin Flame also becomes covered with the Jinn's almost impenetrable skin veneer. It served as a symbol of their deep connection.

I also learned that the Seelie preferred monogamous relationships, cherishing modesty in their bodies and their sexual partners. I was exposed to a whole new range of emotions that I struggled to put into words—envy, jealousy, and a powerful form of possessiveness that consumed me.

But the most significant lesson I learned was that the Seelie, noble to a fault, would do anything to protect their Twin Flame, regardless of their partner's species. They accepted their Twin Flame even if they were Unseelie, despite initial resistance. They chose unity and peace over living with fragmented souls. It was a lesson that cut me to the bone, as I grappled with my own rejection.

Calliope laughed when she noticed Castor and me gazing at her. Teasingly, she began to spin in a circle, beckoning Castor to join her with a crooked finger. Knowing they could use some privacy, I waved goodbye and made my way back to the cave we called home for now.

Entering the cave, hunger gripped my senses momentarily. I pushed aside the gnawing feeling and focused on finding my parents. I spotted them huddled together around a small fire, chewing on a piece of wood bark.

Like me and many other evacuees, my parents had not eaten in days. Starvation slowly drained the life from us as we struggled to find a safe shelter near a reliable food source. It often felt like we had to make a choice between safety and sustenance. But without a reliable haven close to food, our small band of evacuees would cease to exist.

I let out a sigh as I settled next to my parents. My father looked up and smiled, handing me a piece of wood bark. While bark held no nutritional value, it helped stimulate saliva production, easing the hunger pangs, if only momentarily. I absentmindedly chewed on the bark, my thoughts elsewhere, when I felt, rather than heard, the impending assault.

A group of Ghennan Unseelie descended upon a sleeping Troll Trolly. Ghennan Unseelie, changeling slave warriors, their minds controlled by Inhibitors until reduced to mush. Inhibitors were devices created to subdue the magic of the Seelie court, channeling the wearer's magic to the nearest magical being without an Inhibitor. It also stripped the wearer of their ability to perform magic or defy orders from anyone without an Inhibitor. Trolls had awakened and began slaughtering anyone and anything outside their Trolly. Unfortunately, our little camp found itself caught between these two warring forces.

Through pain-filled eyes, I witnessed Castor transform into a colossal dragon, using his immense body to shield us from the Unseelie and Trolls. Despite sustaining severe injuries, he continued to stand against the onslaught, protecting us and our fragile existence. Calliope's piercing scream filled the air when it seemed Castor had received a mortal blow.

In that moment, my father turned to me and the other Unseelie, his voice commanding yet hopeful, My fellow Unseelie, you know as well as I do that we can mend this. We can save ourselves, our families, and all those we love. We can create a new dimension, leaving this world and its war behind. Lend me your power, and I will sacrifice my strength and that of my family to achieve the unimaginable—a new world and a second chance at life.

I didn't fully grasp the magnitude of my father's words or the sacrifices that awaited us, but one thing was clear—I longed for the pain to end. I held tightly onto my mother and father's hands as we began to sing. Soon, the cave filled with the unified chants of the Unseelie. I watched as the world around us twisted and shimmered, and then, to my astonishment, the cave walls dissolved, revealing a peaceful hillside devoid of war's scars.

Turning to share a smile with my father, I noticed his and my mother's life force appeared entirely drained. I furrowed my brow and pulled my father closer, cradling him in my arms. He offered a weak smile and spoke in a soft voice, Your mother and I willingly gave our lives for you and others. Do not shed tears or darken this gift. Honor us by making this new place your home. Love others, seek and embrace your Twin Flame. I hope, in time, your Empath abilities will return. I'm sorry I had to sacrifice them, but perhaps it is for the best. I took only what I needed, but I know you are weakened and will remain so for several months to come.

I watched as my father's eyes closed, and then, without warning, both he and my mother vanished into thin air. I should have screamed, I should have wept, but the enchantment my father created not only took away my Empath abilities—it drained all my emotions. I stood there, gazing at my new world, feeling absolutely nothing.

    CHAPTER 3 ● POV● DINLAS

    03.11.01 AE (After Earth)

Medic Dinlas, Castor is bringing in what's left of a Troll Trolly. They were ruthlessly attacked last night, and the majority of the Trolly was slaughtered in their sleep, Trúcisi's urgent voice pierced through the stillness of the infirmary. I jolted awake from the cot, my senses instantly attuned. The flickering lights cast eerie shadows, illuminating the room with an unsettling glow as I braced myself for the influx of wounded.

How many this time? I shouted, my heart already burdened with the foreboding weight of the impending
