Love and Monsters
John was walking toward the kitchens when a familiar voice curled through his ears.
John,
Lady Helène called, as she approached from a cross corridor, clad in riding gear. Her black hair was caught back and plaited with a twist of pale blue silk.
Milady,
he managed, through a suddenly dry mouth. Her nearness rippled through the air between them, hitting his skin like a heavy gale. While Carlo’s presence heated his body in a straightforward way, Helène’s unbalanced him, leaving him caught between yearning and uncertainty.
You seem much improved,
she said, with a slight smile. The air here must agree with you.
I—yes, milady.
We leave as soon as you gather your things. Carlo is having a mount prepared for you. Meet me out front.
And, with that, she was gone.
~
Lady Helène was waiting outside, on a pawing Monster, when John headed outside. Monster’s head jerked when he saw John. He shook his head and blew, snorting hard.
A saddled gray roan stood tied to a rail, a large, round-bellied mare with feathered legs. Likely not swift, but solid.
As they traveled, John’s mind swirled with inchoate thoughts. Flashes of memory hit him: The resolute, unyielding look on Helène’s face as she beat him nearly to death. Her cool composure as she turned his life upside-down by blackmailing him into being her spy. Her threats against his family.
His mother’s fragile, blindfolded face, with Lord Jeremy leering in the background. His sickening despair, knowing, deep down, that neither he nor his mother would leave that underground abode alive. The twist of hope and relief so profound, on Helène’s arrival to free him from the brother Lords, that it was akin to pain. The glance she exchanged with him, just before she removed that monster Jeremy from this world.
Her small hands, pressing down on his shoulders as he sat in the burning bath, terrified of what would happen to his mangled cock. His knee-sagging relief when he rose afterward, whole.
Riding the maddened Monster with her unconscious lolling form clutched tightly to him. His frantic worry that she would never awaken again.
Her tears, as she spoke of her lost love.
Her lips, brushing his. Her body as it moved beneath him.
He realized then that he loved her still, as deeply as he ever had. Even staring at her back, at the way she moved effortlessly with Monster’s stride, raised in him such a yearning as he had not felt for a long time—not just physical, but with the whole of his soul.
He could not help but hate himself, just a little, for it.
~
John remembered that Lady Helène was disinclined to chat while she traveled, so he was surprised that after they made camp as darkness closed in, she settled in near where he sat by the fire.
He busied himself setting up a small kettle over the fire, to reheat some dried meat and squash.
I take it your time at the sanctuary was as beneficial as it seems?
she said.
Being there was,
he couldn’t keep himself from flushing, very helpful, milady.
Carlo can sometimes work wonders,
she said, those gentle, piercing eyes taking in every nuance of his expression. He felt exposed, ill.
I’m aware,
she said, that our last real conversation, before your imprisonment by the brother Lords, was a difficult one for you.
The axe, hitting her chest with a thud. He swallowed hard.
I had expected to be able to give you a little time to come to terms with it, and to have the opportunity to demonstrate the truth of what I said. But then things became… eventful. For both of us.
She leaned forward. And now, time is running short, John. I no longer have the luxury of time to show you that I mean what I say, about helping your kind win the war.
I—I’m not sure what you want from me, milady,
he said, using a wooden spoon to stir the chunks of squash and meat with a little water, so they would not burn.
Do you remember what I said to you before I sent you to the sanctuary?
He thought back through the blur of those times as best he could. Something about glamour-casters.
She nodded. While all amongst my kind have the same abilities, we do not all have the same level of accomplishment and skill. For my plan to reach its strongest success, the castles of the most skilled glamour-casters must fall first. But—those of your kind who are left in those castles are too cowed, too frightened, to attack my kind. They need someone to show them the way. And it’s important that it be one of your kind, someone who will remain after my kind has been chased away.
Where do I fit in all this, milady?
I want you to lead the revolution,
she said. To start it—and to finish it. Will you do that, John?
Start the revolution. Attack the Lords and Ladies directly.
Carlo’s words came floating back to him. She’s an excellent liar. Was it possible that she was setting him up to be slaughtered, publicly, witnessed by many of his own kind? To be a symbol of the futility of resisting the Lords and Ladies? He wondered what would happen if he said no. His skin tightened as he thought of his mother.
She shook her head. I won’t threaten your family again. I promised you last time that they would be safe if you did as I asked, and I wasn’t able to keep that promise. They are of course fine now,
she went on, lifting a hand to forestall the alarmed questions in his
