    A SMALL FIRE BURNS in the center of our home. I lay in my box-bed and watch the flames dimly illuminating the room. Flickering orange light casts spindly shadows from the kitchen table and the chairs around it. The sun has said its goodbyes for the day and the moon rises to watch over us. Mother sits in her chair before the fire, mending a hole in one of Father's shirts and humming a soothing tune.

    My stomach growls. How long until Father gets home?

    It shouldn't be long now, she says, not pausing her needlework. We can't start dinner until your father comes home. Her own stomach starts growling as we hear footsteps on the dirt path outside. The door swings open and there stands Father, carrying a bunch of items: a few bits of raw chicken and some feathers.

    Honey, I'm home! And I've brought dinner.

    Mother heads for the door and embraces him. I am glad you are back, Lara is starting to get hungry . . . Her stomach growls again, and to be honest, so am I. I'll prepare dinner right away.

    Thank you, honey. He gives her a quick kiss as she takes the items from him.

    I hop up from my bed. How was your day, Father? I ask as I hug him.

    He lays an arm across my shoulder and drags his feet toward the chair by the hearth. It was long and hard. I spent the whole day building the farmer's new shed, but whenever I can bring food home to my family, it's a good day for me. He plunks down into the seat. "And there will be many more to
