Chapter 1

Sitting on horseback, Emman and Ratburn surveyed the town below them. From what Emman could see of it, he didn’t think they’d put up much of a fight. But you could never be sure. He’d seen enough players lose everything because of over confidence. Bearing this in mind, he’d taken more than enough players to do the job right.

You’ve just got to give the order, Ratburn said pausing with his hand on his sword hilt.

Do it, Emman replied and watched as Ratburn waved his sword above his head. Once seen by the players below, Emman watched from the safety of their hill as his players marched toward the small town below them. It didn’t have to go this way, but they’d given him no choice. Going against Ratburn’s advice, Emman had tried to strike up a trade bargain between them. He’d been given his response in no uncertain terms. Killing his two players had been their answer. They’d had their chance and blown it. He couldn’t be blamed for anything that happened after that. Anyone who didn’t bow down to him, would feel the power of his might. After all a king wasn’t a king unless they were feared.

Emman watched with great interest as his reptilian players fanned out and took to the town’s high wall. Throwing grappling hooks and putting tall ladders to it, he admired how quickly they got to work. This had been the first time he’d seen them in action away from the training ground. Now watching them move, he still found it hard to believe that they were all under his control.

Can’t see them being able to compete with this number of players, Ratburn grinned. Shouldn’t be long now.

Emman watched as the lead players took up a defensive position and let loose with this bows. Watching the lit arrows take to the sky, he followed their path as they settled on the closest rooftops. Once given a few seconds, they quickly caught fire and started to burn.

That’ll teach them for dishonouring you, Ratburn said. I don’t care how brave any man is, no one wants to be burned alive.

Do you think that’ll be enough? Emman asked. I mean they seemed determined with that note they left on the bodies.

One way or another they’ll have to admit defeat, Ratburn said. Is it still there?

Emman took out a gemstone and closed his eyes. Like the previous vision he’d had earlier, it was still the same. The gemstone was still in the town. Holding the stone in his hand, Emman could feel the gentle pull in that direction.

They do know why we wanted in there, don’t they? Emman asked opening his eyes. I know we said we want to trade with them, but they were quick to refuse that.

Who cares, we asked nicely, and they said no. No one says no to the King of Reptilia, Ratburn said. There go some of them now. I told you everyone runs when faced with fire.

Emman looked to the town below them and saw the first players fleeing for their lives, running out of town.

I knew that would get some of them to change their minds, Ratburn added.

Emman watched as some of his players broke formation and chased down the fleeing players. Once they caught up with them, he watched as they were quickly cut down. Weakness was something Ratburn told him he couldn’t show now. Show he was weak and someone would exploit it.

Hearing the first explosion, Emman turned to the noise.

I’ll give it to them, they’re not going to give up easily, Ratburn smiled. I think we can safely say they know what they’re doing.

But why stand up to us? Emman asked. It’s got nothing to do with them. It’s not like they could use it?

There’s only one thing it could be and you know deep down it’s them, Ratburn said wagging his finger. You were out of your mind to let them go home. I know they’re your friends and all, but there comes a time when friendship stands in the way. You didn’t think they’d go home and leave it at that, did you? As if Herobrine would go home with his tail between his legs. You know this is their doing, they know they can’t stop you so they’re trying everything they can to slow you down. This is to give them a chance to build and regroup, then come at you. You know I’m right…

I know, Emman interrupted. You said it enough times. But I couldn’t.

You know there will come the time when you can’t say that anymore, Ratburn said. There will come a time when you’ll have to spill blood.

I wasn’t ready, not then. Let’s just get this out of the way first, Emman said. Watching the burning town, he knew everything Ratburn had said was true. He’d been soft on his new enemies. Somewhere out there he imagined the witch hard at work devising some type of plan to bring him down. She’d never had much time for him and would relish an opportunity to throw a spanner in the works.

Hearing another explosion, Emman found himself instantly drawn from those thoughts and back to the battle. Up on the hillside he found the distance he was away from it took the severity out of it. But he knew that down there, there were players fighting and dying because of his command. Feeling a bit of sympathy for them, he let it pass. He’d given them a chance, and they hadn’t taken it. Maybe now others wouldn’t dismiss him as quickly the next time. Watching as the fire in the sacked town took hold, he knew it wouldn’t be long until they got word of victory. Then as if someone had read his mind, Emman watched as an arrow with a red flame was sent skyward. That was the signal he was waiting on.

After you, Your Majesty, Ratburn grinned and swept his hand in front of him. I think they’ll be ready to speak with you now.

Walking his horse at a steady trot, Emman took his time riding toward town. Now on the verge of adding another gemstone to his collection, he knew this wouldn’t be the last time he’d savour the sweet taste of victory.

Chapter 2

Stopping his horse at the main gate, Emman waited for Ratburn to join him. Now up close, he could see and smell the horrors of war. Looking through the gateway, he saw the first bodies of his enemy being piled up and disarmed.
