It's unbelievable what can happen over the course of one year. The subtleties were fun. Updating my hairstyle in the salon and finally giving into Pierre's nudges to go for the big chop. Altering my wardrobe from bland and casual to sleek and sexy. Watching my daughter grow into teen-hood independence and my husband retreat from his usual protective, masculine exterior to a withdrawn and troubled man. Ok, maybe the last part wasn't so subtle, but it gets even more strange and unusual...

The part-time position at the bowling alley and the entertaining of a dangerous man and owner of the establishment, Jeremy, along with his assortment of sordid customers and questionable business associates. The ongoing affair, shady dealings with strangers and most of all, three bodies to cover up. Dead bodies. My level of compartmentalization was in full mode, trying to keep my head together and thoughts off of the what ifs creeping up and growing paranoia. As crazy as it sounds, it could be managed better, over time, if it wasn't for my husband, Gene's strange behaviour. A growing secrecy and the betrayal of leading me, in part, into this messy predicament in the first place.

Fast forward to the evening of the surprise party. I was summoned to the bowling alley by a very stern Jeremy, only to find all of my family, friends, acquaintances and faces (both familiar and unknown) of the establishment. Congratulations, they said. You are now a partner. It all happened so fast. There was so much to keep a lid on, and yet, here I was amid such chaos supposed to be overjoyed and accepting of it all. It was a huge leap forward in a career path I never thought possible, and for more reasons than I cared to consider...

Smiling graciously and shaking hands, the clicking of my heels took me through clusters of people. Megan, my best friend and salon owner in the mall, and her new fresh-faced boyfriend. Very fair in complexion, wearing a conservative shirt and dress pants. Handsome in a plain, country-boy sort of way, I thought. He would probably feel more at ease on a golf course or hiking trail. Megan introduced us, excitedly bragging about how long we knew each other, going back to our college days. In fact, we were sisters-in-law. Although I had been withdrawing more from my dear husband Gene, my friendship with Megan remained strong, though in time, it too would fade.

It's wonderful to finally meet you, he offered, with a firm handshake. A good first impression. Megan mentioned so much about you. Congrats by the way, what a great opportunity. I appreciated his warmth and sincerity. He seemed like an appropriate compliment to Megan's wild mood swings and passionate lifestyle, if he could weather the turbulence. They made a decent couple.

My eyes scanned an expanding sea of people, some in groups and others wandering from one to another. Like waves in an ocean. Endless too. Jeremy had connections, and that was obvious here. He could pull together half the city or more, from the underdeveloped countryside beyond the suburbs to the urban core.

Gene appeared in my peripheral vision, chatting enthusiastically with a young woman wearing an emerald dress and messy updo, long wavy pieces of dark blond curls escaping sporadically around her face. Perhaps she reminded him of me back in those days, when our relationship was less complicated, or seemingly less so. My newly cropped hairstyle would normally be seen as a bold move, under normal circumstances, considering Gene's strong preference for long hair on women. It didn't matter anymore, though, given our marriage was a disaster, only held together by keeping up appearances and sharing parenting responsibilities. I was learning very quickly about a whole new layer beneath his facade. A disturbingly dark one that I had no idea existed. Jeremy had one of those too, running very deep beneath the surface. I knew too much already, though there was much more to learn. Much, much more...

Panning the lounge and taking a break from repetitive greetings and niceties, I found refuge at the bar where the familiar Stan juggled bottles and poured drinks for the clientele. His warm yet sly grin was an oddly welcome gesture.

Congrats my friend, he announced, grinning widely as he poured a margarita. He
