Chapter One

The moon hung full and engorged, high in the night sky directly overhead and shining so brightly Tara could see every detail of the hotel’s Georgian architecture. It was well past midnight and most hotel room windows were dark. Palm trees swayed gently in the jasmine and hibiscus-scented breeze, throwing odd shadows across the walls of the courtyard. Outside the air conditioned confines of the pounding night club the evening air was silky, warm and humid.

Tara Mathers glanced at the man strolling down the moonlit walkway beside her and blinked hard, looked down, then back up. Yep, it was really him, Troy Schell, professional football player. They’d danced together most of the evening and had a great time. And he was still here. In fact moments before, he’d asked if she would take a walk with him to get some fresh air and she agreed. She shook her head in disbelief, coming back to the present.

They walked down a tropical plant-lined path that lead through one of the many courtyards dotting the vast hotel grounds. Each featured pieces of local artwork and intimate seating areas that mingled with lush, romantic garden hideaways. The garden setting was even more romantic in the moonlight.

Troy looked into the night sky. Wow, can you believe that moon? It’s huge.

Really spectacular… Tara agreed.

Tara had no idea where they were going but the walk in the moonlight was enough for her. It had been so long since she felt the call of romance in her life that she was content going anyplace this incredible man led her.

They passed beneath a large Banyan tree whose gnarled roots and huge canopy took on a spooky aura in the moonlight, and Tara edged closer to Troy, feeling safe in his presence. They followed the path as it led through a stone archway. The path came to an end at a set of weathered wooden steps that led down to a secluded beach ringed by a horseshoe of jagged rocks on each side and dotted with palm trees.

On the far edge of the beach near the rocks sat the hotel’s water sports activities hut surrounded by kayaks and small sail boats secured to a dock that stretched a short distance into the water. The horseshoe shape of the land created a small harbor perfect for launching the kayaks and small sail boats and was a safe place to train new scuba divers.

They silently absorbed the awe inspiring view from the top of the steps. The moon hung over the water and cast a long beacon of light from horizon to shore, and the entire ocean surface glittered like diamonds as gentle waves lapped the sand.

They walked hand in onto the beach, found a soft spot under one of the palm trees and sat. For several minutes they sat quietly, taking in the beautiful evening, then Troy spoke up.

I love this island.

Tara turned to him Have you been here before?

Yeah a lot, actually.

Tara was surprised. What made you start coming here?

Troy was quiet for a while, lost in his thoughts; finally he spoke. When I was fifteen and my mom was really sick I spent a lot of time sitting with her in the hospital. She was bad…really bad. I just kept asking her questions because I figured if she was talking she wasn’t dead.

Tara saw tears form in his eyes.

I asked her once, if she could go anyplace in the world, where would it be? She said Barbados. Now, I had never heard of Barbados, so I asked her, why there? Troy was staring across the moonlit ocean, but he was clearly back in the hospital room with his mom.

She told me it was a little island in the Caribbean and when she was in high school she did a report on it for some class. After spending a ton of time researching it she thought it sounded like paradise.

Tara smiled sadly and thought back to her own mother and the many nights she had spent at her bedside.

I told her that when she got better I was going to take her to Barbados. He continued. Well, she got better but the hospital bills were crazy. If I didn’t have a football scholarship I never would have made it to college. Anyway, when I was drafted by the Bulldogs and got my first signing bonus I brought my mom down here. She was right, it is paradise! I come down a couple of times a year. Troy said quietly.

I’m really sorry you didn’t get more time with your mom, Tara. He said softly, and then leaned his massive shoulder in her direction until it rested against hers.

Her throat constricted and she could only nod. It was the nicest, most meaningful thing anyone had ever said to her about losing her mother. They sat together in silence for a few minutes then Troy suddenly stood up.

I’m sticky with sweat and I smell like a damned ash tray. I think I’m going for a swim. Want to join me?

Tara looked up at him. I didn’t bring my suit.

Troy smiled broadly. Neither did I! He unbuttoned his shirt and slid it off his shoulders, tossing it into the sand. Tara drank in the beauty of his naked upper torso. His shoulders were broad, thick and incredibly powerful. His chest was wide with a thin downy covering of soft blond hair. His massive biceps bulged, thick veins crisscrossing just beneath the skin.

But most impressive was his midsection. She expected a guy of his size to be a little doughy around the middle, but his stomach was flat with one of the most distinct washboards she had ever seen, with a muscular V that that started just above his hips and dove down the front of his abdomen and disappeared below his belt line.

Troy reached down and untied the drawstring at the front of his pants, hooked his thumbs into the waist band and began to slither out of the lightweight linen material. His pants soon lay in a pile with his shirt. Tara’s heart skipped a beat and she gasped. His thighs were like tree trunks; thick corded muscles rippled in the moonlight. A thin blanket of blond hair covered his crotch but what lay at the center had Tara’s heart in her throat. His manhood was impressive to say the least. He was bigger soft than Richard was when fully erect!

With a boyish grin, Troy put out his hand, Come on, there’s nothing more refreshing than a late night swim.
