About this ebook

The white Maruti omni was on the move. Shambu ensured that no one noticed him. He did not make too much of noise as well. The roads in Chennai can be quite a mess during peak hours. The noise, the speed breakers, people moving on the road. He was used to all this; but he wished it would all be fine today at least. He looked pretty calm even though the task on hand was a daunting one.

Passing through the St Thomas mount road, there was a silent prayer on his lips. It almost came naturally to him. He knew that God will not be alongside him today. He knew that the task in hand was not something that God would accept. He began to think of his appa, who had worked hard in the coal mine all his life to earn a good life for his children. A life of working in the mines had degraded his father’s health and no one cared about the diseases he had due to the working conditions. The mine company violated all rules for safe working and now has managed to evade law as well to deny any health compensation for him. The giants are too hard to beat in court as they have all the big lawyers on their side and beating a diseased man is the easiest task for them. He also thought about his brother who had died in an accident in the same mine his father had worked and the company failed to give any compensation citing individual negligence in the accident.

His own life was not very smooth. After working as a construction labor for 3 years, he had had enough with that life. He dreamed of big things in life. He wanted to reach the heights and quickly too. He did not want to die young like his brother. Nor did he want to work like a donkey like his father all for a losing cause.

When Shankar mentioned to him about Victor and his idea of making quick bucks, he did not think twice before meeting him. He had enough of this life. Shankar was Shambu's childhood friend. He had escaped the slum long back and had fled
