What was supposed to be the most exciting time of her life and a spur of the moment decision to surprise her fiancé had all gone horribly wrong. Typical!!! She thought as she watched the stupid light flashing on the dashboard of the stupid rental car.
As Marife walked away from the broken car, she couldn’t help but feel as if there wasn’t something quite right, but she couldn’t put her finger on exactly what it was.

    MARIFE AND THE GHOSTS

Marife brushed her long black hair out of her face, huffing and fighting the urge to kick the side of the car. The vehicle was a rental; the first one that the man at the desk had offered her when she had turned up at the vehicle rental office. She had been flying for hours, the flight from her home on the Camotes Islands near Cebu, Philippines took over sixteen hours, and she consequently had no patience to quibble over whether she wanted a green or a blue Hyundai. As soon as Marife had managed to stuff her luggage into the back of the small car and had set up the sat-nav, she was off. According to the British woman's voice issuing from the small screen, Adam's house was only a half an hour drive. Marife was extremely excited to see him. Adam and she had been dating for two years. They met in a medical clinic in London where Marife was working as a nursing assistant. The two became fast friends and later on, lovers. When Adam proposed to her, Marife went home to Camotes Islands to let her family know about her upcoming wedding.

Her fiancé wasn't expecting her until the next morning but Marife had managed to switch her ticket to an earlier flight, hoping to surprise him. Butterflies were already fluttering inside her chest and she had to keep fighting to pull her attention back to the directions that the sat-nav was calmly reporting to her.

'In two hundred feet, take a left.' The woman's voice said. The sat-nav’s programmed voice had been so calm during the whole drive that Marife started to get annoyed. The light had faded fast, the only thing illuminating the road in front of her were the street lights which were unevenly spaced alongside it. Taking the turn that had been indicated by the sat-nav, Marife found herself in a narrow backstreet, both sides crowded high with trees and bushes. There were no street lights here, the headlights of her car showing her only a few feet in front of her. After around ten minutes of driving, a red light had flashed up on the dashboard before her and she'd cursed lowly, slowing the car to a stop.

It was due to this flashing light that she now found herself sitting on the driver’s seat of the car, pressing buttons desperately on her mobile phone in an attempt to get service. It was no good; the thing just refused to connect to anything. Marife sighed, glancing around her in a final attempt to find a way to get her car started when she noticed a faint light glowing over
