About this ebook

The most powerful thing a person can do is to share their life with complete strangers. A writer does this by writing in a way to make your world fade. As an author progresses in their journey to becoming the best they can be, we like to think we are pulling you the reader along with us. This project is about that. Writers write so readers can read. That is the idea anyway. We do appreciate you the reader coming into our worlds for a few minutes. We hope what we have written will take you away from your day just long enough to forget about it.
Once again, we come before you to stand behind you, the reader, to invite you into our worlds. Worlds that we have built or, in some cases, destroyed. We hope you enjoy this edition as much as the others.

    Foreword

No matter what their occupation a writer is a writer. The guy next to you on the bus or that offset co-worker who always looks lost I n thought. No matter the region, fiction is fiction. No matter the age of the author, the story remains the same. We as writers strive for that very thing any other non-writer strives for. That is recognition. Recognition of our skills and talents to bend words to fit the need of expression intended to bring you into our world we have created or in some cases destroyed.

We sometimes write on autopilot. Not out of necessity but out of an unconscious effort to become part of the plot. To make it as real as all possible but not so farfetched that you close the book in disbelief. Our sole purpose, as a writer, in life is distract the reader from reality. Sometimes we succeed and others not so much. What we strive to put before you is a means to do just that. Thank you for your following and loyalty.

    Acknowledgements

I would like to thank all of the authors that participated in this edition of the June Project. It is called the June Project for the simple reason that I named it after an Author, one who is in that transition position of being under a contract and not publishing at all. It’s a process that might never be fulfilled and lost; ready to give up writing all together.

We appreciate the craft of authors in the past and are always looking for new talent.

Don’t worry love, you’ll be fine. Jackie’s smile was tinged with worry.

Easy for you to say. Davy sat with his head lowered, staring at the floor.

It’s only a wee filling. Nothing to worry about. Jackie nudged him with her elbow. After all, it’s not like when I had that root canal work done last year.

Yeah, but. Davy stopped, chewing his nails. I know it’s stupid. He gave a bitter laugh. I mean, here I am, forty years old, ex-army, seen active service in Iraq, nearly got blown up in Helmand province and I’m scared of the bloody dentist.

She took his hand and squeezed. You’ll be fine. This new dentist is fantastic, everyone’s raving about him. Maureen said she never felt a thing last week.

    I hope so.

David MacPherson? Davy looked up. Hi, my name’s Robbie. Would you come this way please? He extended his hand as Davy pushed himself to his feet. Davy shook with him. He glanced back at Jackie before resigning himself to his fate and following the dentist.

So, how are we doing today?

    Davy shrugged. Okay.

Robbie grinned. Not a fan of dentists, huh? Davy gave a small nod. Don’t worry. You won’t feel a thing, I promise. It’ll all be over with before you know it.

    Hope so. Davy wasn’t convinced.

Robbie steered him towards a door about halfway down the corridor. He pushed it open and ushered Davy inside.

A young woman sat at the far corner, busy with some tools. Davy tried not to look at them; they gleamed. She looked up as they entered and smiled.

    Hi Stephanie, this is David.

    Davy.

Right, sorry. Steph, Davy; Davy, Steph.

Hi Davy. Steph’s teeth gleamed. Come and take a seat. She gestured to the chair.

Robbie clapped Davy on the shoulder. Davy’s not a big fan of dentists, he said as Davy lowered himself reluctantly into the chair.

Not unusual. Stephanie had a lilting, rolling brogue. You’ll be fine, Davy. Robbie here’s one of the best.

So they tell me, Davy murmured, unconvinced.

Right, said Robbie, pulling on a pair of gloves with a snap. Just a small filling today. Davy swallowed and closed his eyes as Robbie outlined the procedure. His stomach churned at the words ‘a small prick’ and he thought, yeah, too right, it’s hiding at the moment.

"Okay, Davy, if you can open nice and wide for me… that’s great…and a small
