Chapter One: Introduction
Island of the Blue Dolphins
by Scott O’Dell was first published in 1960. It is a children’s novel. The story of the novel revolves around a young girl who is stranded on an island off the California coast for several years.
The novel is based on the true story of Juana Maria. She was a Nicoleno Native American who had spent eighteen years alone on San Nicolas Island in the 19th century.
The book was the winner of the Newbery Medal in the year 1961. Later in the year 1964, it was adapted into a movie with the same title. The author wrote its sequel, Zia,
which was published in the year 1976.
In real life, when that Native American woman was rescued, the Lone Woman of San Nicolas Island became famous because of that woman’s strange story.
Only after a few weeks of her rescue and moving to the mainland, that woman passed away. It is said that the woman was a tourist attraction and people remembered her story for several decades even after her death.
Once, O’Dell was researching a nonfiction book about California when he suddenly knew about this incident. He decided to write a novel about her life.
It was originally not intended to be a children’s book. His friend Maud Lovelace, a children’s writer, advised O’Dell to write the book for children.
While writing the book, the author fictionalized several aspects of the real story. In the true story, the woman was an adult when she was left behind on that island and she was rescued when she was in her fifties.
No one knows the real name of the woman but it is reported that she used to live in a cave. She used to spend her time making jewelry for herself. However, most of the things about her remain mysterious.
Major part of the present novel is based on author’s speculations rather than fact. The protagonist in the present novel has been deliberately presented as a younger girl to attract young readers.
The book immediately became a bestseller when it was published. The novel also describes the difficulties which the woman had to face after her being rescued. She found it very difficult to adjust to the life on the mainland.
Island of the Blue Dolphins
is not only an interesting and absorbing story, it also tells us about the life of Native Americans.
