    CHAPTER ONE

THE WARNING alarms sounded. The ear-piercing noise stopped all the colonists in their tracks and made them look across the grassland at the alien spaceship nicknamed the Piper.

Standing ankle deep in sea water, Florian Fawkes grabbed hold of Nick Benhill’s hand and began leading the way back to the Piper.

    What’s the rush? Nick asked.

Something bad is happening. We have to get back.

Nick reeled Florian in forcing her to look at him almost nose to nose. I don’t want this moment to end.

Nick, come on, we have to hurry.

I was enjoying your company. The sparkling sea, the warm breeze teasing the tips of your long dark hair, the absence of annoying birds squawking overhead, to me is a wonderful dream and it has come true.

Don’t let the peacefulness drag you into a false sense of security. This planet might turn out to be more dangerous than the overcrowded and crime ravaged Earth.

You sound disappointed about being on this planet?

No. In fact, I am hopeful one day Planet X91 will be the perfect place to live. Until we’ve thoroughly explored this entire planet never forget we’re not on the Earth.

You’re correct. The Earth doesn’t have a view of two moons. Seeing those giant balls hovering just above the horizon and the way your hair shines in the light is something I will treasure in my heart all of my days. I want us to forget about those sirens and sit on the sand enjoying each other’s company.

Nick, we’ve wasted enough time, we have to get back and find out why the sirens have started.

Reltso and Kelsey are the military men on this island, let them fix the problem.

No. Clay and Josh will be running on to the Piper’s bridge as we speak. They’ll be expecting me to join them.

I want you here with me to enjoy this moment.

Florian half dragged the teenager up the beach. On the crest of the sand dune closest to the Piper, Nick tried one last time to stop Florian from getting back to the grassland by tugging on her arm.

For the last time, we have to hurry, said Florian.

I still can’t get used to seeing an alien spaceship.

You get used to it, jeered Florian. She pulled her hand away and sprinted around to the front of the ship; Nick hot on her heels. Both almost collided with the boys as they sprinted for the hatch.

    What’s wrong? puffed Florian.

We have no idea, said Josh.

Clay ran down the corridor first. The others in the group brought up the rear. Instead of running, Nick slowly walked to the bridge, stopping at each hatch to look inside the room.

Bounding onto the bridge, Josh immediately saw what caused the sirens to wail. A dozen red lights were flashing on the navigational computer relaying the fact something large was closing in on the Piper. He got busy tapping on the keyboard and brought the long-range scanner online.

What’s all the noise about? grumbled a man, slowly dragging his feet onto the bridge. He swiped a pair of reading glasses out of his pocket and placed them on the bridge of his nose.

Clay shook his head at his sluggishness.

Can you stop the noise? The entire camp is beginning to look and act nervous, he whined.

The sirens are sounding to warn us something is approaching, explained Florian.

I insist you stop the noise. It’s giving me a headache. How is it possible you can even think while listening to such a high-pitched sound?

Go back to whatever you were doing. Clay, Josh, and I will see to this, insisted Florian.

Girl, you have a bad attitude.

    I do not.

If I must guess I’d say Josh is at the computer typing. Kid, move aside, I’ll discover the problem, said the man.

We’ll fix this, grumbled Clay. We’ve done this sort of thing too many times in the past.

You three are children. I insist on fixing the problem.

Josh stepped off the bridge, glaring at the man. Be my guest.

    Who are you? questioned Florian.

I’m an engineer. My name is Sergey Swyers.

The man of average height sat heavy on the seat and began pouring his concentration on to the computer. Inside a few minutes, he pushed his fingers through his short blond hair. I have no idea how to stop the sirens.

Didn’t you just say you’re an engineer? questioned Clay.

I am, yes. I’m a building engineer, not a computer genius.

Are you admitting you don’t know your way around computers? asked Josh.

Yes. In fact, not at all. I’m more of-a-hands on engineer, admitted Sergey.

    "Henry,
