CHAPTER ONE

IN THE soundless void of deep space, the only noise belonged to the USS Lock’s five engines.

On the navigational computer screen in the exact middle of the bridge a red light started flashing. Moments later a buzzer sounded. For close to a minute the high pitched shrill remained at a tolerable level, but as the minutes ticked off the noise escalated. On the other side of the bridge, adjacent to the red flashing light, a monitor brightened. The small speaker screwed to the metal bench blasted to life. The metallic voice began its monotonous monologue warning.

‘Proximity alert. Proximity alert.’

Next to the navigational computer was the communication computer. The monitor also brightened. A cursor flashed several times then the computer was automatically brought online. The cursor spelt out forty-nine words. It was as though invisible fingers were tapping the letters in their correct sequence. There was no mistaking the distress signal.

‘MAYDAY. THE EARTH SHIP THE USS LOCK

IS ON A COLLISION COURSE WITH AN UNKNOWN OBJECT.

OXYGEN INSIDE THE SHIP HAS BEEN COMPRIMISED.

THE CREW OF THE USS LOCK WILL REMAIN IN CRYOGENIC SLEEP.

WHEN THE BATTERY BACK UP SYSTEM FAILS, THEY WILL WAKE.

THEY WILL DIE OF ASPHYXIATION.

The mayday signal went out into deep space in every direction. At first the signal was strong and clear, but as the signal expanded the words faded out and were lost in the endless void of space.

TWELVE HOURS EARLIER

FOR THE millionth time, Evelina’s spirit pushed through the three hundred thousand other Crenoxian spirits on her way to the bright illuminous names on the dark purple display board next to the rebirth tube.

Hovering in front of the small round viewing window, Evelina felt annoyed the solid yellow crystal shutter remained closed. Her mother, Queen Mitta, hadn’t bothered to spare a moment of her life to see her daughter.

The Crenoxian Princess looked around the large plasma holding pen. She knew there was no way out except through the fifty-inch round glass rebirth tube. At the other end, a giant machine was on standby ready to help a Crenoxian to be reborn. Evelina had witnessed the rebirth of Crenoxian warriors countless times. The easy accomplishment had been used for a millennium. Ninety minutes after entering the accelerator, any Crenoxian will be back to their adult status.

Livid and becoming more furious at how the humans were able to murder her, Princess Evelina wanted out. She wanted revenge. She wanted to eat the brain of Clay Silver and Florian Fawkes. She smirked a little. For dessert, she wanted to eat in one gulp the brain of Josh Quinn. The best part would be the satisfaction at sitting in the pilot’s chair on the bridge of her beloved ship, the humans renamed the ‘Piper.’ Evelina dry retched just thinking about the horrid name. She pretended to spit the name from her snout.

Princess Evelina, I have important news for you.

Evelina watched the spirit of a Crenoxian warrior navigating his way through the floating crowd. When he got close, she started her barrage of clicks and whistles.

How dare you talk to me. I am Queen Mitta’s daughter, Princess Evelina. Bow before me you irritating little thing.

The young soldier looked alarmed at being growled at by the Princess. Instead of conforming to Evelina’s commands, he floated closer, staring directly at the beady black eyes of the Princess.

Go away, you crawling insect.

Princess Evelina, my name is Rarm.

I don’t care to know your name or what job you were doing when you died. Leave me alone.

I have important information you must know.

Unless you are trying to tell me I am about to be reborn, I doubt what you have to say is important.

Queen Mitta murdered me!

Impossible. It is unlawful for a Crenox to murder another Crenox. The penalty is banishment.

Evelina pushed past Rarm and floated off in search of Briana, her navigator and best friend.

Scooting around the countless Crenoxian spirits, Rarm followed Evelina at a short distance. Eventually Evelina stopped and waited for Rarm to catch up.

I have already told you to leave me alone. When the next Crenoxian to be reborn and I strike up a deal, I will leave this place. We will never see each other again.

Please, Princess Evelina, you must believe me.

I don’t have to do anything you say, let alone believe in a lie about my mother. You do understand she was Queen of the Crenox?

Yes, I understand. Princess Evelina, Queen Mitta did murder me. Ask her when you get out, insisted Rarm.
