    CHAPTER ONE

One hundred and twenty-two years have passed since Florian, Josh, and Clay, crashed into the trees on Planet X91 in the maintenance shuttle. A lot had changed since the beginning. Or was everything still the same?

    # # # # # #

FLORIAN LEANED heavily on her walking stick and against the shatter proof glass of her apartment, three hundred feet above the ground. She looked out over the countless buildings toward the horizon on her left and right then along the road directly in front of the building. The manicured lawns and well-maintained gardens at the fringe of the park close the building still looked the same; perfect. They had been that way for as long as she could remember. The haze on the horizon revealed the air quality had dropped over the past one hundred and twenty-two years since Clay Silver, Josh Quinn, and her, Florian Fawkes, crashed into the trees on Planet X91. She giggled a little at realizing nobody had bothered to rename the planet. She lived in hope after all the years, mankind could look after the planet. So far, her dreams had been fulfilled in more ways than one.

Somewhere past the building on her right, the sea licked the sand. The tranquil bay looked extra peaceful. The waves were miniscule and the surface of the sea sparkled in the bright sunshine. A few people were swimming. She moaned a little at realizing she hadn’t swum in sea water for decades.

Florian’s long grey hair moved slightly in the warm summer breeze. The mountains at the rear of her apartment towered over the city like a tall monument. On the crest of the mountain, human workers had built a lookout. The main purpose was to look out over the ocean and the great city. Of late, young adults used the space for a lover’s corner. Nine hundred miles further back snow covered the mountain peak. A chalet had been built. Someone decided humans should enjoy the fruits of the planet. The chalet was one of them. Another fruit of the planet everyone enjoyed was the idea of boating. Many yachts and large and small solar powered boats had been shipped from the Earth over the years. Travelling through the black holes had its advantages.

Florian watched hundreds of people walking about. They reminded her of ants when she used to live on the Earth all those decades ago. She was born there. In a small suburb near the beach. Although the air quality was poor and the crime was horrendous, she and her friends loved the sea. The curfew from 6:00 in the evening until 6:00 in the morning was annoying. That was when the criminals ruled. The only way to keep them at bay was to leave them be. After a brave cop escorted a political man who worked for the government to a large park, they met the top crime boss from no less than fifty gangs.

On the momentous night, they shook hands, sealing the deal. Both criminal and politician knew if either broke the agreement there would be hell to pay.

Florian smiled wearily, watching the people going about their task of the day in perfect safety. Here on Planet X91 there was no crime. The first rule of the planet; if you were found guilty of any crime no matter how trivial, you will be sent back to the Earth. Plain and simple. Even after more than a century, the crime rate remained at zero. Nobody wanted the crime. They knew how bad the Earth had become. Not one person wanted to go back there.

To all the humans living on Planet X91, everything was free. The second rule: everyone worked.

Florian saw some people shopping, others were rushing toward the building where they worked, while others had stopped what they were doing and were talking under the shade of the large trees. Children of all ages played in the park opposite her apartment.
